I was needing help with repairing an HS-PX310, when I received it the motors worked and it was stuck on FFW but after taking it apart, despite seeing no damage to the player, it does nothing. The buttons were not working before I took it apart which I have heard is probably a cap issue so I'm not worried too much about fixing that one. My main worry is that the belt turning does not move either of the (errr don't know what they're called sorry) parts that advance the tape along. Most of the gears I can see remain motionless and I assume this is a big problem but I don't know if it is fixable.

Overall AIWA walkmans are very difficult to fix.
Do you see motor running without applying the belt??
Try to run the motor alone first. Almost all AIWAs have capacitor issues including this model but Capacitor might not be the onloy problem
If motor is fine apply the belt and run it again. If motor is not able to move the spool then try to manually turn the gears to see what causing the gears not to move

See other members experience with repairing this model:

When I connect the batter and have everything off I see no sign of life. I might need to resolder the wires for the motor or it could be due to not being able to start playing the machine due to the caps. Right now the plan is to re-cap and touch up some soldering and see where that gets me.

I assume you are pushing the two contacts (bottom of your photo) together to make the motor work? Mechnaically I can't see a problem.

I worked on it some more yesterday, when everything is fit together and batteries are in the player it is stuck on fast forward. But unlike when I first started working on it, the spools are now moved by the motor! So I just need to repair the button functionality which is supposedly usually fixed by recapping. If that doesn't work I will have to do further testing, but I'm not ready to give up on this thing

The FF RW is mechanically operated by the slider switch - it engages the small plastic cog with one of the two larger ones either side. Your photo shows the cog not engaged. If it's constantly FF'ing them maybe the motor is in OD? The motor control chip can play up...see my other post

Oh I thought that was just the direction not ffw and rewind I'm an idiot. Well ffw and rewind work as intended, only problem is broken buttons then.

Test the solenoid first - if you touch the terminals with + / - of the battery tray (using wires) it should click... You can test the buttons with a multimeter - touch the terminals and press the button - resistance should drop to zero.
