    Hey folks

After repairing a few other Walkmen recently I just got a nice looking aiwa model.

Initially it was fully dead but I quickly found a spring pin/ pogo pin for the detachable double aaa pack was faulty and fixed that. So then it turns on, but nothing else and no buttons respond.

i bought a belt and fitted it tonight, then also found a reset terminal to touch/short inside the cassette door, so I used it and now the buttons respond.

    So far so good!

The main issue now is on the radio and tape, there is very very weak volume, but instead a sort of horrible electronic ‘howl’ which gets louder as the volume is increased.

I cannot find either a service manual or owner manual sadly for this model, but am wondering if I should maybe try to see if I can get some caps for the board and see if they help, or see if there are any other common things that can cause nasty audio like this

thanks in advance if anyone has any info about this model or can offer any advice.

Here’s a sample of the sound it makes through the headphones anyway, like an electronic raspberry or fart noise!! The underlying audio is present from the radio tuner but it's very quiet compared to this noise.

I’m gonna remove find new caps for it online if I can and gradually change them out. Or possibly even just replace the lot as I have read these Aiwa’s are bad for all of the caps going bad.
Interested in any input on whether this sort of noise is typical of specific issues though.

    Thanks!

Thanks, yeah I was gone default to trying that once I find suitable uk site for getting them.

looks like I can get some of them on Digikey but not everything.

I notice the through mount electrolytics are a different type to the smd ones. Are they all likely to have failed too? Might possibly have some for those anyway.

I might invest in some hot tweezers like I saw mentioned on another thread as they would defo make this stuff easier. Already have three solder stations though so it feels a bit excessive!

one other question I have is what techniques do people find best for cleaning/refreshing the contacts in a headphone socket? Too small to get a cotton bud in but guessing it needs a tiny bit of abrasion to really clean it up.
