I would like to buy a portable disc player but I don't really like the old ones that are popular amongst the people of this forum/hobby (sacrilege). I'm more into modern, thin, design (heretic). So I have put my eyes on two late-generation discmans that are easy to carry around if I wish + play a wide array of disc types. D-NE1 and D-NE830, I find both beautiful actually, and they go around for very reasonable prices (I've found them for £80 and £48 respectively). What's your opinion/experience with these? Good/Bad DACs? Overall quality? Repairability and how faulty they usually are? Thanks!
I was about to buy the D-NE830 once precisely because it does have a good minimalist design that I like. New good quality gumstick battery are still available too. I would only caution against buying low cost scratched up samples. I'm searching around now and see prices are up there for nicer examples with the remote (very similar remote to the MD players of the same period). Though one could buy a beater that "hopefully" works to test it out and, if ya like it, buy another better condition one with low hours...or two... or three. As for the audio, that is very subjective, up to the listener to determine, best to try it out and use various headphones to arrive at any conclusions. Best not to take too much heed of others opinions of sound quality etc., I can't speak to repair-ability but I would suspect it is easy to swap out the optical sled / motor unit with another unit. This may be still workable without adjustments. All interesting things to test out actually. Hmmm. Dang. You got me thinking about Discman players again. hah. I might just buy one...no. It will pass. Deep breath.
