Hello everyone i just bought my first walkman its a A602 I’ve replaced the belt and everything is spinning when i press fast forward it works and the backwards one too but when i press play the auto reverse is looping it plays 1s and than the gears shift and than the other spool rotates back and this just keeps looping. I saw a post about a clutch gear so i took a look and yes its broken im thinking of buying a new gear but do you think this wil fix it?
Hello Rune Van der. It is hard to say that it will fix it without see the inside of the walkman. If you can post picture of the inside of the walkman and the part that is broken it will help me to diagnose the problem you have. But a golden rule is that if you see something is broken and replace broken part it may fix the walkman but you allso never know if the walkman have other minor problems. Remember it is retro old tech
Yes you're absolutely spot on usually the case with old tech is there will be tons of oxidization on all buttons and switches it's usually a process of fixing it over an extended period of time mostly, sometimes you get lucky and you throw a belt on and all is well! not with AIWA'S though, never unless you happen to find one that's been kept in a non corrosion environment,, I never have especially if they come from Fukushima which is right near the sea,,, sometimes it's a real drag but it's hugely rewarding when they sound good and that that was all your own doing.. enjoy, do the best, knowledge will accumulate. Kind regards
This type of fault can be caused by mechanical or electronic issues. It often is a process of fixing the clearly obvious faults,, to the point it can play,, then test all functions,,, regards blank skip feature,, use a blank cassette (head clean cassette) to determine if blank skip feature is working and can be switched off,,, I mentioned this because I thought my repairs were completed until I inserted a head cleaning cassette and could not turn off the blank skip,, something easy to miss if a cassette with material recorded on it is used,, My case required connection to ground to restore the ability to switch off blank skip,,, Without the ground connection the circuit would activate after a few seconds and would search continuously! Kind regards
if there is a cracked gear that connects with the take up reel (typically its used to detect if the tape is stopped for the auto stop or reverse function), that does trigger the auto-reverse/auto-stop if cracked because of the gap in between the teeth if that doesnt fix it then you can turn to checking electrical components, though i highly doubt this is an electrical problem here
This mechanism needs a new clutch gear, which can be found here: https://fixyouraudio.com/product/sony-wm-a602-clutch-gear/ The problem is mechanical, the auto-reverse system on this walkaman series is fully mechnical, no optical speed sensor or solenoid. Please read post #18 on this thread: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/list-of-walkman-portable-recorders-common-problems.7535/ for a complete list with walkmans having this mechanism. The table reel gears might need to be glued to the reels if they're slipping, this is also a common problem on this mechanism.
