Finally, it has happened! Now I can call myself a proud owner of a Sony DAT Walkman, TCD-D8 model! Picture slightly edited in levels for better visibility, 1€ coin placed as size reference for those who have never seen a DAT device or tape before. Unfortunately it didn't come with the battery box (how is that part actually called, officially I mean?). So this means I will have to use it as a "cheap alternative" to an expensive big recorder and as a stationary playback device for special days. It did come with the power adapter as displayed in the auction and even with a Maxell tape, a pleasant surprise that might make up for the missing piece. A bit of audio is recorded on the tape and allowed me to verify that playback, stop, FF and Rew at least work (and it sounds really clean), although I didn't test its recording functions yet. This was a must-have purchase as even if I decide to purchase the model that I would call "DAT device of my dreams" after all I would have lacked a recorder. That being said, a special thanks to @Machaneus and @Longman who have provided me sources and advices on my plans for this purchase.
Congrats Sly for your purchase , I'm certain that you will fully enjoy it ! Keep us updated with future purchases and/or reviews while using it. Unfortunate that it's missing the battery holder , TCD-7's fits also (probably from other Sony models also , I have to check) ,TCD-8's battery holder has golden contacts in accordance with its exterior jacks. Great to see S2G DAT family expanding.
Thanks! Seeing as the devices are practically identical with one just being a tweaked version with slightly different paint, that'll most likely be the case, but nobody seems to be selling just the battery holder or module by itself, neither for the 7 nor the 8. At least a quick search on ebay didn't result in anything usable today. I'll ask the seller if he may have forgotten it or if he can find it. Worst case it'll just remain stationary, I wouldn't even mind all too much. Or I will consider 3D printing it, I do have access to a printer, although I would have to take a closer look at this part to recreate it and find proper metal to embed into the print. Once I give recording a try I'll definitely make a little review of it. Before I do, I want to get a second tape though, just in case something goes awfully wrong. You may never know after all.
