The capstan and pulley bearings in the Aiwas I've had apart, consist of what looks like a chrome steel shaft through a brass bushing. There is zero evidence of these bushings ever being lubricated or wearing.

Does this combination of metals create a bearing with extremely little friction and wear?

Would lubricating them eventually cause problems as the lubricant ages?

    Your thoughts are appreciated.

I would leave it dry and clean when the device is stored for a long time. You can always lubricate the bearing with some oil when you want to use it later. There should be some lubricant in there when its working. A brass bushing with steel shaft is never a lubricant-free design.
