I recently bought a Walkman WM-EX921 to plug in to my car stereo so I can play my tapes. I'm looking at external battery boxes so I can use AA's in it. I've noted two types so far in Sony brand. One is for use with a Walkman whose contacts and locking screw holes are centered on the end of the housing. The other has the holes offset to one side which is what the 921 has. My only access to parts is online so I have to work from pictures. Getting most sellers of used merchandise to measure, let alone being able to trust their measurements is not going to happen. Service manual was easy to locate. But it does not address accessories. Does anyone know if there are a lot of different hole spacings or could I be so lucky as to find there are only these two which I can tell apart just by looking? Maybe different locking screw sizes as well? Thanks. Don
I don't have this model but am sure there are other models that share the same battery holder. Can you take a picture of this walkman battery connection? I want to see how exactly the battery connection are located on the side of walkman.
Yes. There it is. They moved the contacts to the offset position so there would be room for the battery compartment. Making room for everything in that tiny case had to be difficult. Makes me even less patient with the car manufacturers who insist they can't find room for anything but that sorry excuse for a spare tire.
The older Sony comes with different external battery boxes, but they standardized it later on. Looking at pics online of your model with the extra battery compartment, I'm quite confident that it's the standard one. They're pretty easy to find, though perhaps not separately. Look for broken walkmans with the box fitted. Most of the "thin" EX & FX series use this model. Fortunately, the different boxes are very easy to distinguish. They all look very different, so a quick visual confirmation is enough. It should look like that. A snap-fit cover, with no buttons.
Thank you. That helps. I have been watching a listing on ebay that just ended with photos of a group of 10 boxes. There were only 2 views but they did not all appear to be identical. I could discern however that they all had the offset hole pattern. I almost bought one just to try it. Glad I didn't. If he relists, I'll contact him for additional info. I would think matching their thickness to the walkman case would be good. Thanks again. Don
