Recently started a Hitachi TRK8190, belt change and service , it had never been opened , radio was fine .
All went well , DRPS even came back to life after an alcohol paper pinch .
All back together and the tweeters sound like they are on their own now , both radio and tape completely muffle unless full volume ..
    can’t see a pinched cable …
Next steps from anyone with experience would be great

Check you haven't misconnected or created an unwanted short circuit?

If you separated the circuit board and deck check the record replace switch. Usually a long silver case multiway switch on the circuit board which is moved by the record function on the tape deck. If mis-aligned you might be stuck in record or something.

p.s. The Hitachi seems to have two of them with yellow plastic loops at the top.

No I removed the board/deck in one piece then removed the tape transport , one 4 point plug for the speakers and a couple of others with brown cable shrink on , like it though I will try see if I can spot them , yellow loops you say…

I pulled down my 8290 and the top is filthy. Clean all the controls with contact cleaner, I use DeOxit, Nickeccles is over there and I think has some local cleaners he uses. The FUNCTION knob will cause all kinds of sonic issues so definately clean that one. Sometimes if you turn it rapidly you can briefly hear clear sonics.

One of my big Onkyo Stacks out in the shop is the same, to get some volume on the TT I have to do the above fix (without cleaner). Someday I'll open it up and do it right but it works for a few hours before I have to do it again.

Cool , looking forward to it , I use servisol super 10 for switches so will try that first ..
Picked up a desktop power supply finally so may try clean each one ..power up and see if it works , nothing worse than blindly fixing something as I have a que of these to try get running … ending in my childhood 8190 when I graduate as a trk master bodger
