Update on the Discman D250. The middle gear was of course the problem and fell apart when removed from the pin. A friend has a 3D printer and made a new clip for the battery cover so this cheap D250 I bought on eBay is a keeper and so nice to find a Discman with no SMD component no longer on the PCB.
