Does anyone here backup their tapes to the .flac format?

    Hello all,

My iPod of about a decade seems to have died out, its battery does not last enough to see much worthwhile use. I have upgraded to a Walkman (sadly not a tape one) NW-A45 that advertises 'hi-res' audio. After some research I realised this means lossless formats like .flac. This makes me wonder if anyone here backs up their cassette recordings (using good hardware of course) to their computer, hard drives etc. as .flac files? I normally save mine as .wav but I thought it would be a novel idea to back up my tapes and then transfer those songs to my modern Walkman for listening!

Curious to hear all your thoughts. Thanks!

I'm using Wav and Flac , WAV is uncompressed and lossless while FLAC is compressed and lossless that makes Flac files smaller in size and they can carry more tags than Wav and these are the reasons I use sometimes Flac , sound wise , technically and to my ears the one is not better than the other , after all they are lossless formats.

So for less space and more tags for archiving FLAC. If these factors are not priority WAV , why compress if you don't have to ?

EDIT : Noticed that you mentioned "Hi-Res" audio capability of your walkman , Wav and Flac support "Hi-Res" audio , meaning that you can have eg. Wav in CD quality (16bit/44.1kHz with data rate of 1411 kbps) or Wav (24bit/192kHz with data rate of 9216 kbps) but to get the advantages the greater sound detail that offers the keyword is the source , for example a sound studio master file.

I see. I've never dealt with the .flac format before or paid much heed to it before. For the purposes of my new Walkman I think I will download and rip files as .flac to save space and for more tags. For pure archiving on my laptop and hard drive .wav it is, I don't have endless waves of CDs and tapes so it shouldn't each too much space :p
Many thanks for the input, great explanation.

So glad that was helpful , I think that way you can have the best of both worlds.:)

Edited my reply above with some "Hi-Res" info that you may find useful if you have access in real worthy "Hi-Res" files , the sound is amazing.
