    I buy a-Lot of 1989-1992 Discmans as 'organ donors' for the iconic Discmans repairs, but always check each and every one from such buys if they are actually as 'dead' as promised by eBayers. This Sony D-2 Discman I bought because of its bundled Car Antivibration plate. When supplied with 9V DC, D-2 draws over 1Amp from my power supply - definitely a short!
    and what a short it is - head-shell was totally blown off ELMA 150uF/16V electrolytic:

    Not to be construed as a bad-rep for Elma - this particular 150/16 electrolytic is to be found in quite a few Discmans and they all tend to be solid as of 2021. How and why this one managed to get blown is a mystery to me;

    Protective Diode (the one famously missing in WM-D6 Walkmans) is here and it is intact.
    My only explanation is that AC-AC instead of AC-DC adapter had been plugged into this Discman

    .........

    Out of curiosity I desoldered and tested a few electrolytics, found nothing special. A few leaked a bit, one gone bad, but it looks like Elna cap saved the board from some nasty power spike

    There's nothing more scary than a cap exploding, it's the last thing you expect and it's usually next to your face.

    But to explode to well exceeded the capacitor's 16 volts ... or it was just faulty
