Before I just crash into the house with the door I think it might be appropriate to introduce myself as far as it is needed. I'm from the once former eastern block part of my country and I am practially only here because I have ran into troubles with my personal stereo equipment. But on that later on... My hobby involves computer from all centuries and audio equipment is only a minor part. Still an interesting one. And my 'road warrior' equipment. But I'm out of luck on nearly all of my tape machines. All have worn tape heads. Muffled sound, especially left, unbalanced (toward right) and so on. But I seem to be to stupid to find replacement on my own. Including my Unitra Reel-to-Reel machine, RFT SK3930 HIFI Tape Deck. This WM-D6C, even the MZ-1 have problems detecting disks (missaligned laser, working on that later). Only got a Pioneer CT-676 in very good condition to make reference cassettes. And the GC-60x0 (got two) are mono recorders. And I have a plate mono heads bulk (maybe 12pcs). But I need stereo recorder heads... damn. signing of,
Welcome, that's a nice little collection, don't worry about the non-working units, it's part of the hobby. After 30+ years most of this equipment needs a little refreshing, most units just need contact cleaner (I use DeOxit) for non-working channels and a belt or two for the motor, for MD and VHS type equipment I like to make sure there's movement in the transport and no dried lubricant. I can do basic repairs and in a lot of situations that's all I need, some of them might need a real workbench but most of the time it's just the basics.
Well, the most was fine from the get go. The WM-D6C is mechanically pretty much all good, except the head. The SK3930 needed new belts. Also had a broken resistor (good luck to find that one, if it doesn't indicate any physical signs). One of the Geracord GC got a damaged cog, and the true hell was the Pioneer CT-676. Idler wheel in the middle had to be replaced. The MZ-1 had rounded cogs on the eject mechanism. I removed them, filled them with glue, cut the teeth back out under a simple microscope. Also a torture.
"Disc not reading" seems to be common problem with MiniDisc units... I gave-up on a few when they exhibited that problem, mostly because I haven't to equipment or skill to really investigate the issue. I sometimes blame it on the disc, if it won't play in two different machines.
