Hi, apparently I have to start off by introducing myself, ok. Here goes: I have always loved music and want it to sound both good and loud. My main hi-fi has evolved through the years and I am currently the proud owner of a collection of run down equipment which sounds really nice and can go loud enough to crack plaster:Main music system- currently semi-retired until I can get some speaker covers made up which do not colour sound and are good enough to prevent my cats wrecking the drivers, system is: Celestion Ditton SL662 speakers, rather large, currently not on the original mid range units as they had an accident, got some similar but lower powered mids in until I can afford to get the originals re-wound. A Rotel RA1412 integrated amp, again, a big heavy monster (like me!). This is semi-retired and instead I am using a Rotel RC972 pre-amp and a couple of Rotel RB971 power amps in bridge mode (this is how I cooked the mids!), I hate to admit it, but the RA1412 is outclassed by the other amp combination I am using. I have just disconnected my ADC Paragraphic Sound Shaper Three, I am going to have to strip it down and do a lot of contact cleaning of huge multi-way switches to get it to work reliably, good when it works though Then there is my Aiwa F770 cassette deck, replaced a belt but need to do the other, also one recording channel isn't working but it plays back perfectly. My Rega Planar 3 with RB250 arm (I think) and Shure V15 cartridge are all hiding from the cats, besides I have lost the power supply for my phono pre-amp so it isn't much good at the moment. I also have a Sony minidisk deck MDS-JE480 and several minidisc walkmen which I am using to transcribe old dying cassettes onto, including an MZ-RH1. I also have recently bought a couple of JVC PC55s to play with and hopefully sort, listening to one at the moment, more on that in the appropriate thread. I think I have covered everything relevant, so Hi!
Once I get the F770 running right, two new belts didn't help it, I need to source a new idler for the reel motor mechanism, tthe Soundshaper is the next project, it has several 31 way switches I believe, lots of contact cleaner will be sacrificed to get the old switches working right. More annoying is that when I bought the Soundshaper, it was with a set of Celestion Ditton 662 speakers and a Rotel RA1412 amp. Dug out the amp tonight and hooked it up, one meter light has failed, but more worrying is the LOUD crackling coming from the power side of the amp. Turning down the volume, changing the source, or even splitting the pre from the power amp (a switch, nice!) doesn't stop the bangs, I have switched the speakers off, would the volume up to moderate and am letting it play music to itself to see if the circuits settle down.
Temporary amp fix: Using the RA1412 pre-amp, together with the 2 RB-971 power amps in bridge mode, sounding good. Ordered white leds for the PC55, not keen on the blue, ordered a new idler tyre for my F770, now to hunt for new bulbs for the meters in the RA1412 and make my mind up about whether to attempt a lcd swap on my 2 PC55s.
