I just spotted this in the BBC headlines https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-57763301 In my local store there is already less shelf space dedicated to discs than greeting cards, split more or less equally between DVDs, CDs, and Vinyl, and that is tucked away in the far corner of the shop. Twenty years ago they were right by the entrance and to prevent theft you had to take the empty case to the adjacent Tobacco counter to pay and get the disc. I just hope that Charity shops don't follow suit, although with the price they get for CDs they might go the way of VHS tapes which none bother selling. Last weekend I got a chance to go to the next village and picked up these in the Salvation Army shop because I fancied them. The LP was £1 and the CD 50p. In the early 1990s I used to go to a second hand shop where you could buy second hand CDs for the bargain price of £8 each, the equivalent of £18 in today's money.
Only format i ever really liked was cassette but 90% of the ones on ebay don't work....would have loved Dat but i only like pre recorded ones so dat was out for me to0...hope you're keeping well and sane longman lad
I can see it all going the same way as LP’s, those same people dumping them now will be buying them back later while wondering why they dumped them in the first place. If you are into CD’s now is the time to buy.
Either would be better than tapes. Tapes are low quality unless you record your own on premium tape with premium equipment
Not sure i agree with you, the last cassette i bought was from Chasing the dragon and it is very good. Admittedly it was recorded on a Nakamichi CR-7 from a Reel to Reel master.
I'm fine thanks. We actually have a car boot sale locally tomorrow so will see what is there. Lets Rock Southampton has been postponed a second time to August. They obviously trust the football fans to behave, but not a load of 50+ music fans most of who spend the entire concert in their deck chairs while enjoying picnics. I have thought that for a long time having actually seen offers like four for a pound in Charity shops. The linked articles in the BBC article are interesting explaining how little money less established artists get from streaming. In contrast some very popular bands who made their breakthrough in the 1980s like Banarama never bothered touring back then. A few top ten singles was enough to keep them and Pete Waterman happy. I have commented before how many people seem to take out a streaming subscription then take their entire music collection to the local charity shop. Something that fascinates me about about Vinyl is its longevity if looked after. I recently managed to get an LP from 1962 and when it turned up it was absolutely pristine, looking as if it had never been played. I wonder how people will be playing music in 2080 ? I can imagine pensioners getting all excited in finding a Spice Girls CD then. Will there be anything be left working to play it on ?
Cd is far better than tapes guys but it always jumps....nothing worse than listening to a fave track and it jumps...the cd always used to instantly get snapped in half lol
Probably not played much, it may have been owned by one of those idiots who say “I bought this record and I recorded it immediately to tape as I don’t want it to wear out”. Sad people that don’t know how to enjoy anything. Every time i play anything, i want the best experience and best sound so i will play the original over a copy any day. I bought a record from the charity shop the other day and it looked immaculate, I am happy to find them like that. If these people don’t play them because they don’t want it wear out, I come along and buy them for peanuts. It’s a win for me.
yup agree with toocool i need the best quality i can afford, electronics or anything....i don't do mickey mouse lol sadly quite a few don't like me for that reason, especially regarding boomboxes lol.....im sorry but if the sound quality is shit it destroys the whole experience for me.....just had an enigma album on one of my setups and subsonic bass came out of my monitor audio that i have never heard.....i burst out crying, sounds strange but good quality can move you guys
On a different note, on a different forum someone was just complaining that they accidentally recorded over their music because they did not realise it had gone into record mode when they press play. Only noticed after they had gone and sat down and music was still not playing. I replied did they not break out the write protect tab once they had music on the cassette. I got the reply “No I never do as I want to keep my cassettes whole / intact” Guess what I have no sympathy with people like that, my reply was “Well the consolation is you lose you music, but you get to keep your cassettes tabs intact. I wanted to laugh my ass off . I know a bit cruel of, but really it's funny.
Jesus that's hilarious toocool lol....one thing that used to get me, people used to spend a grand on something like an m90 and then complain that batteries were to much, what nutters lol
Yes I know what you mean, they send the money on the kit but can’t afford to keep it maintained. They should have thought about it, before spending the money.
i was in hospital a few years ago with my victor m90 for a couple of months lad, wasn't allowed to use mains so bought batteries 10 alkaline used to go through a set every couple of days, people loved the music and radio, the whole ward was bouncing lol....i mean for the pleasure £20 a set was nothing, used to buy 40 at a time lol
God bless my friend haha lol....people spend 50 k on a car these days and it's nothing, so good radios and hifi isn't much to ask for imho
I was referring to retail prerecorded tapes, the vast majority were low quality, and then 40 years takes its toll, since most people do not store their tapes in optimal conditions. For this reason I stopped buying old tapes from Ebay or boot sales or record stores. I've always been disappointed. As for Chasing the Dragon, I was hoping to see an "About Us" on that page, but strangely there is none. They could probably sell a lot more if they explained their process.
cd's are the best a great transport=studer d730 AES out + new DAC is far better than usb from pc, my experience. to me, digital format, nothing beats cd. cd's are getting cheap, it's a must buy. vinyl these days are the worst ever. every new vinyl i bought s@cks. compared to 70's vinyl, there is no comparison. don't buy new vinyl, it s@cks. perhaps it's the mastering. master from some mp3 or cd. you just can't compare it to original 60/70 and some 80's vinyl records.
The question is which CDs (and I don't mean which Album). The loudness war ruined many peoples perception of CDs as time went on. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war I will be interested to try the KTel compilation, which dates from 1974, soon. With ten tracks on each side they always had a reputation for avoiding any kind of loudness which would have pushed the cutter into the adjacent groove.
yep, that's a problem i've noticed the early cds are more sounding like vinyl. the philips lhh 2000 sounds great with these cds. not resolution but it sounds better than my emt950. yep in 1985 they had the cd-player which was better than vinyl, the cd-player was the philips lhh2000 which is better than vinyl, the rest sucked. strange, philips never made a cdp better than the lhh2000. now i know, why japanese like the lhh2000, it's the best cdp for 80's cd's. it's not resolution, but it's presentation and it's better sounding than vinyl. yep, it really is. it beats my emt 950. the EMT is at some vinyl 70's pressing better. but in all. it's the lhh 2000. it's the only cdp i would recommend. for new music it's studer d730 transport + new DAC later digital had more resolution, other dac etc well, the best sounding cds are classical. loudness wars i dont know which cds they fckd up
Some LP’s I had picked up lately, Amy Winehouse at the BBC, Yello – Yell40 Years, listen to them then tell me they are no good. Those 2 examples of my recent LP’s sound fantastic.
