Doesn't it look a bit fake in some moments? I mean: he don't open the motors (and they miraculously work), don't apply any grease, the motherboard just works and he only checks continuity, dont adjust azimuth...
It does look too “miraculous” to me! Double-deck with auto-reverse? The lowest of the low-end out there, my Q was: why bother? But it does look like a nice ad for the resto-shop!!!
I started working for a guy in the 80's (just when Run DMC was getting huge, someone had spray painted it in the alley), he had a fire in his storefront shop's upstairs but you could still go into the building, there was a ton of water damage and he had a ton of electronics for the business. Some of it looked really roached but I'd pull stuff out, really smelly, and almost all of it still worked. He'd open them up and give them a proper cleaning if they did but that always amazed me.
Since they “bake” boards with SMD parts/chips during production, survivals of overheating are not as Miraculous as this ship-wreck... Flex-board got cut, but no damages to the mainboard? I agree with @walkman archive, this one is a Miracle! And so much troubles for the sake of a $30 cassette deck... surreal
I love seeing stuff like this, I watched a guy clean a white fishing boat in Florida, it sat for a few years but with a good pressure washer and some hard cleaning, it looked great, luckily under the crusty cover, the engine looked new. Some of it is a labor of love but compared to the restoration shows on cable, these guys are awesome.
I've watched a few of his videos, and some of the stuff he restores is nothing short of miraculous. Just proves if you have the time and patience (and skill!) you can probably fix anything. And lets not forget, where he is from, something like this may be far more expensive than where we are and therefore worthwhile restoring. I'm going to retract this post as it's clearly not the same deck at the end of the video, see what I posted below
Duly noted! Personally, I would like to watch resto efforts from someone like Willy Hermann who has a full set of (unobtanium) mirror cassette, back-and-forward-tension cassettes, freq-generator and a set of Nak cassettes he used when Nakamichi ruled the Earth... Not going to happen though, the Dude is too busy with a backlog for a few years...
I watched the video several times, I think the guy is very enthusiastic about his work but I doubt it if the final deck displayed is the same as one he serviced. I think from 32:15 minutes the deck is switched with a better functional deck. The final deck has almost perfect case specially behind the deck with all lettering and warnings....., the case was oxidized and he painted it. How did he print the letters behind the case? Maybe I am wrong .
