Anyone seen this issue on this or similar model?

What does it do when it gets to the end of the side it's playing? Does the direction LED change? Do you hear any clicking when it switches sides?

Direction led changes to reverse for a 2-3 sec and goes back to forward. I can hear the clicking when it switches sides.

I tend to avoid ALL auto-reverse thingies: Walkmans/Boomboxes/CassetteDecks, nothing but trouble and lo-fi in reverse play... Check what the Play-Head looks like, if it has to rotate for the Reverse, those gears have to get washed and re-lubed. If it is Walkman-Style, then it must be corroded contacts, as @Mister X implied

The tape head rotates fine. It plays for a a few seconds in reverse with the cassette tape getting a little loose inside the shell and flicks over to forward again. The player doesn’t spin at all on the left side.

I think you found the problem:
...plays and fast forwards fine but rewind and playing in reverse does not work...
...plays for a a few seconds in reverse with the cassette tape getting a little loose inside the shell and...

Pick-up Reel in reverse play, which is also a Rewind reel, is loose and slips instead of picking up (or rewinding) the tape. This would immediately stop Reverse play

Take another look at this reel: either rubber tire needs rejuvenation, if it is gears maybe something cracked... or hub is too loose on the spindle
