Techmoan recently bought a Japanese marked one from Russia as he reckoned the Japanese marked ones were cheaper.

There again we probably all know about the supposed "Techmoan Effect".

((( This one I have not seen yet - but I have seen this seller before )))
and I again paid less than either one including shipping from Japan!
&&& When I am finished I will sell the jvc for the price of what I paid for the victor as I had a victor years ago and I sold it back then as I needed the money back then but now is different.

So if you found one at a garage sale would you feel guilty if they only wanted a few bucks for it?

IF I found it I could buy it and repair it and then sell it for my time and parts involved plus the time to find it and all that and sell it for // ok wait, a few dollars, ok so Seven Bucks talked down from Ten bucks as it did not have the power cord, right? Seven bucks plus my time at $60.00 per hour times 2 hours for this easy repair plus 3 belts at $5.00 each. $142.00 bucks so far right now lets take some pictures heck I may even shoot a video of it all working now and then put it on ebay for $149.99 and no reserve Plus shipping and let the buyers price it up them, does this sound good? In my case I bought mine off the internet so I will do all above except that my start price will be more than Seven bucks but less than Two thousand Seven hundred and Fifty when i go to sell one of my two m90's as i now have a jvc and a victor m90 and I am leaning toward maybe keeping the victor but definitely selling the jvc. Now your thoughts?

It's amazing what some of this equipment is going for now, I keep the price tags on my stuff so I know how much I paid. I don't feel guilty at all, I was saving a ton of audio equipment when everyone was tossing it out.

I try to save the html pages of stuff that I have bought over the years so I can reflect on what I paid for stuff versus what they are being priced at now, which is WOW! for some things which make me think I should hang onto some but I just do not have the room anymore so I have to repair what I have and just let it go. The largest boomboxes will and are going first as i prefer the 9 volt 6 battery radios versus the more battery operated models and there are one or two 10 battery radios I may keep and likewise a very few 8 battery operated radios but I am conentrating on saving the 9 volt models as they give me the best bang for the buck in sound and portability for me.

I remember when i tried to sell a fully working m90 for 250 pounds on the forums and nobody wanted it lol , people only want these for the money investment, as far as i can see, im glad i hate money and the whole idea and get these for the love of repairing and using the boxes lol

But it's not just this model ... prices have gone up a lot lately. If I put on Ebay.com, the search (Boombox) with the highest price, the first 100 exceed $ 1000: it starts at $ 3956 and ends up in the hundredth place with $ 1300: it's okay to earn something maybe on the work done on the repair , but I would say that by now there is a lot of speculation, this is my thought then it is also true that if you have availability, every price is relative

when something costs 100x more than it was back in the day it's not worth buying imho

as far as i can remember this craziness only started about 3 years ago....if you go on facebook things are a fraction of the price......ebay should do something to stop this but nope all they care about is money like almost everyone else

Prices drop pretty quickly once the handful of "collectable" boomers are scrolled through on the sold boxes but they really are into silly money territory now. What is also interesting is all of the world-wide places the boxes are showing up for sale.

I think the frenzy started in the mid-2000s, that's when this forum and AudioKarma really started growing, guys like me started actively hunting for all of the cool, unique models that we never saw as kids. There was a dip with the economy crash of 2008 for a few years but it bounced back pretty quickly. Lately, with all of the movie and TV exposure it seems like everyone is reliving the 80's and you can't do it without a cool stereo or boombox.

It is all down to three words

    Supply and Demand

    now for a car analogy.

Near work there is company that deals in scrap metal. Last week I was surprised to see what looked to be an undamaged MGF bodyshell in the back of one of their trucks.
Looking on Ebay I was surprised to find a roadworthy example of the same car for less than £1000 buy it now.
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-MGF1-...464653?hash=item1d07b6afcd:g:jBYAAOSwal9geT5L

I then decided to look up my first car, a Ford Escort which was one of the U.K.s best sellers in the early 1970s. Admittedly the hotter versions did have some Rallying success back then.

Not believing the Buy it Now prices I looked at completed listing and found this
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mk1-Ford-Escort-Mexico-In-Need-Of-Total-restoration-/303899441953?hash=item46c1d17b21:g:0WoAAOSwfl1gOAsg&nma=true&si=yqLozdPhvE3inNs7HhxaO0Tzz80%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
So someone paid over £9000 for a heap of rust with a blown engine

The more sensible alternative might have been something like this
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-escort-mk1-rs2000-/254854018868?hash=item3b567bb734:g:pQIAAOSwu3pgCJ8f&nma=true&si=yqLozdPhvE3inNs7HhxaO0Tzz80%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

although for that sort of money you could buy a brand new Ford Focus (which is the equivalent in Ford's range these days).
Of course the Escort would now draw lots of attention at a car show, while a Focus is a typical commuter car.

I think the same applies to Boomboxes.

One thing I am wondering is if the top of the range 1990s CD playing eggs like the Panasonic Cobras will attract similar prices in twenty year time.

p.s A challenge for "Mister X that I have just failed at. How much was an M90? Once we know we will feed it through an inflation calculator.
