Hello, again! I just acquired this near mint GE 3-5259a Blockbuster with a few problems that many folks have come across on theirs. I took some photos as I went along on my repairs. Hopefully these may help others who have the same problems.

And now the VU meter issue......

The deoxit worked for a while.

I had it working for awhile and I installed a blue LED strip in it.

Unfortunately The left meter stopped working and while trying to fix it, I broke the left meter beyond repair by ruining the spring and knocking it off it’s pivot point. But I got an idea! I had a dual, 7 segment LED VU meter out of a dead Zenith R-99 so I cut it out and retrofitted it into the clear plastic housing of the original analogue ones! I had to run 12 volts to it and the left and right signal wires from the original and voila! Even the battery and tuner level works when you push that switch!

    Wow, very good work!
Yeah the meters are always dead on these. No surprise that the AKA's of this box decided to use LED meters instead.

Posts showing how to dismantle tricky stuff can be the difference between a fix and a dead box for the next guy so taking the time to do it is always appreciated!

Nice fix on the vus...I’d need the leds dead centre tho and the gaps at each end covering somehow. But that’s my ocd tendency lol

I've got a few units with single "dead" VUs, any idea why these stop working? It's one part I never look into.
