Right, aware that there are other threads that have these issues, but I figured I'd lay everything out real quick- also, hi, new to the forums.

So, in my getting into cassettes, I first purchased a random cheap player just to try them out, then did what I usually do and jumped ahead, getting a D6, in my mind the perfect walkman, aesthetically and functionally.

TLDR, After a while of looking, snagged a semi-functioning one off of eBay, got some belts and a battery cage for it, and bam, theoretically functional D6.
    However...

Prior to belt replacement, predictably, it didn't play at all. Post belt replacement, it plays at about +47.2% speed with comical flutter (the number is from my calculations, actual time/expected. I don't have numbers on anything else.)
Concerned, I've done what I can to clean things and resurfaced the pinch roller, which was glossy, which did help the flutter somewhat.

Random additionally, I'm not sure the VU meter is working properly? I've only seen the bottom light come on, despite the recording sounding fine.

My concern is that it is the speed control modules inside going bad, and I'm really not sure I have anywhere near the skills to replace those parts. Any advice would be welcome!

At a minimum you would need to open it up and desolder two very small daughter boards on the main board and soak them in acetone and pick off the potting that has become conductive. Wires will break from solder pads along the way. If you haven't dealt with very small electronics repair in the past, I'd find someone to send it to for repair.
