Here's an interesting subject, when did miniture FM Stereo circuitry come out? Sanyo is advertising their little portables in 1972. Little stickers with "IC" were pasted on a ton of portable audio back then.

Some more Marantz from 1985! Some of their last boomboxes. Interestingly these are branded Marantz UNIX. Don't forget the Marantz Pen-Compo on the bottom at $695 Singapore Dollars. This is the Marantz "James Bond" Boombox, I can't read what it includes, most likely a tape player, tuner and amp, plus the speakers. This is a very late siting for that unit but gives us good dating

There's also the super-small UNIX CRS-3 at the top, $99 SD, marked down from $220 SD, this is the only ad I've seen of this product besides the pool ad.

Another ad with the Marantz UNIX Pen-Compo from 1985. This is a little easier to read, it's the complete system with EQ, Tape Player, and the rest of the system

In 1985 a Singapore Dollar was worth about 90p

(I can't find any US data older than ten years)

So the Marantz Pen System was about £470. that sounds plausible as a similarly aged advert I found recently had Aiwa systems at £299 to £499.
Feed that through the Inflation calculator and you get £1400. I always compare these prices to todays mobile phones and imagine that in twenty years time youngsters will be saying "You paid How Much for a phone ! :lollegs:".

I'm getting $1,100.00 USD, unbelievable but we have Cassette2go's Photo from Japan with similar pricing. The component CD players were around the same price, yep this stuff was big money back then and CD's were $20 each on top of it.

The difference was that once you had bought your stereo, or finished paying it off there was no significant future expenditure other than a tiny amount of electricity and maybe tapes to play on it.
    In contrast

and after five or six years it is completely obsolete

Whoa, such a cool stuff, thanks!

Under "Double grill" they meant coaxial speakers I guess?

It sounds more like sound diffusion from different grill designs. I've got an old JVC Mono Box from the same era, it has an oval grill, maybe it changes the sound?
