    Hi everyone,

so I purchased a nice Sony CFS-F10 from Japan recently. The unit arrived and works great, in its box and packaging. Only problem is, when playing a cassette, it makes a nasty ticking/grinding sound. This affects the speed of the cassette. Suspiciously, the unit came with this Sony service bag and gear in the box:

This gear has a belt attached to one end, and the toothed end attaches to the take up reel. See the teeth are all wore down? I also have a sticker that says it was serviced and replaced in 1985. So this is the original gear from 1982. I took the unit apart and found the gear in it that was added in 1985 is wore down exactly the same way.

I reached out to Marian from fixyouraudio, he said that a soft plastic was used, and that’s why it failed prematurely. There are 3 gears that sit around the toothed end of this gear, so the strain put on this part is higher than normal. He said to makes this part, he would need to order 1000pcs at least. So we cannot go that route.

I am asking you guys, how can I get a replacement gear fabricated, there has to be someone out there who has done something like this before… any experience or knowledge is welcome and appreciated.

Haven't forgotten about this project. What I've decided to do is reach out to 3D printing fab houses near me and quote a price on printing a gear. That might just work out.

These videos were very useful in helping me take mine apart! Looks like you are having a different issue with mine, as mine now works fine, with just a clattery sound, but I cannot understand why the gear on yours is ok??

That's a good idea, I know the feature set of both is pratically the same (the F11 adds autoreverse). Sadly, the mechanism looks very different. Check out this video on the F11:
