I bought this unit over 1993.1994 brand new, to buy it I had to save the money I got working at weeken as a waitress. It was my adventure's partner along the 90's, tube, bus, work, beach, swimming pool... you can imagine it had a hard life till the motor breaks. In that time I didn't have any skill and tools but I try to change the motor... The pcb and motor was damaged and the unit went straight to my junk box
Recently I saw in Ebay a unit sale as for parts, It had no specially good appearance but the price was not bad. After talking with the seller I made an offer and came to an agreement. When I tried it, the motor didn't start and a disgusting noise arise from it .The unit was in very bad situation, a lot of dirty inside, and what it seems sand from the beach
As mines's pcb was damage and the mecanism of the new one don't know if runs ok, the plan was swap the pcb and motor of the new one in my unit. Ones I had assembling I tried, It started to run but after 5 seconds changes direction and so till I press stop. Motor noisy, I took the upper rotor of mine's and tried, very low noise and smooth movement, but the same, change direction after 5 seconds.
I desolder the photo sensor, and a/b switch of mine's pcb and solder in the other pcb, but same result. Solenoid changed, deep cleaning of the pinch rollers and capstans, change washers of the capstans... and back to the road again!
Now I'm looking for a remote control, I dind't find it in my junk's box. The problem is that it isn't possible to adjust the sound without it. As I remember the default megabass mode and asl control adjust is off, and my ears tell me so too. I don't know if there is another way to change. On the pcb there are, what it should be, testing points but don't know if it' possible to actuate trought those to change the settings. Any idea?
I found a way to set the dbb mode control, with a wire. Now the dbb mode is on all the time. I don't know if is the mid or max set up, I thing is max, at low volume there is a lot of bass, and as I remember the position mid don't have so much bass. I couldn't find the way to set the mid position. Vocal appears to be turn on when I join vocal ctl with the bridged wire for the dbb mode, but no only vocal mode as the remote control provided acts, it turns on dbb + vocal. However if I only joint vocal ctl with the same point as dbb did, nothing happens. Dbb max position at low - medium volume doesn't like my ears. At hig volumes is good but there are many times I hear at low volumes, mainly in the bed at night. Overall, I'm happy, and by the moment the dbb keeps on. The wire has be changed for another thinner one and there's no any issues after 2 days of use.
I think it is best to check the service manual. Via the remote different signals based on resistor combinations could be sent. Below are the values for the playback and fast forward-rewind functionality:
That's correct Emiel, but I don't have the manual and the skills required to understand what I have to do.
Here is the manual to start with. I must have downloaded it for free a while back from one of the known sites.
Great! Many thanks, as I could understand the mid / max adjust is controled by the transistor Q705, I suppose if I joint the control point to the correct leg of the Q705 It switchs on mid position. PCB must be removed in order to solder the wire, I wouldn't like to do that unless I'm sure is the correct approach
I have been done a test, switching on the dbb and then joining control point mid/ max dbb to Q705 with a wire, and the dbb turns to mid position I think, there is a good amount of highs not present in normal position and a little more bass not very significant, as I remember It uses to be, but the last time I hear It was many years ago
