Sony was good at having the media hanging out those tiny machines, design and engineering was so much more fun back then.

Even today the SL-XP5 is still a good CD player.

Just-CD has it on his website and I found this photo on yahoo.jp with the matching speakers. This would have been drool-worthy in 1987 when this stuff was new and exciting. I never had the cash for it, even the CDs were pretty expensive and they didn't have the punk/rap/heavy metal I was into yet, although it was right around the corner that the factories really started churning them out and the dollar clubs started sprouting up.

Hopefully this stuff gets identified before it gets thrown out. Most Technics of this time period were a little better than entry-level and I could see somebody looking at that cube and tossing it instead of spending some time passing it along. Your right about the price, it's was about the same as a semester of college for me back then.

the younger brother for SL-XP7: SL-XP5 was my favorite Discman, it sounded as good as the best of Sony's and because of its Totally Crazy power supply providing -6V/0V/+6V (which according to KaosunCD.com makes all the difference!) I "could hear" its superiority!... But being spoiled by Wadia and Naim Audio CD players I might have just fooled myself,... who knows?..

Received this lowly Panas yesterday: Panasonic SL-NP10. Also bought its Service Manual, it is an exact copy of Technics SL-XP5!!!:)
Unfortunately, the dreaded lid crack of XP5 is also here, battery has to be revived with new cells... BUT!!! ;) I am onto a good start of rebuilding my lost/burned by Woolsey Fire collection!!!:)

And don't forget the Quasar CD8966 that also is part of that family (SL-XP5). Mine also has the battery pack, all metal construction and weighs a ton. Back then that was an issue for portablity but now it's a bonus. I found a buyer's guide that had the SL-NP10 and CD8966, while identical, one of them was $10 USD cheaper, Panasonic was really working the different levels with the three product lines.

Great find Silver965, even though I can't read it the pictures are great! You should post it in the Walkman Archeaology Thread, I think I posted more information on this nice little player.

I recall going to a HiFi show around then and one stand had a "mobile" decoration made from about fifty CDs hanging from the top of their stand. I recall thinking that was about £1000 worth of CDs. At that point we didn't know that a decade later you would be able to do the same for free with six months worth of free AOL CDs stuck to magazines and coming unsolicited through your letterbox.

P.S. Were earlier CDs prettier in terms of the rainbow prism effect or were publicists just more careful with lighting when that was a novelty ?
