In the world of audio enthusiasts, the TC-399 Tape Machine is real proof of Sony's tape machine's unwavering quality. This remarkable device enjoyed a production run spanning four years, from 1978 to 1982, and its enduring popularity attests to the steadfast commitment to excellence exhibited by Sony. At the heart of any high-fidelity audio transmission chain, a tape machine hinges on the harmonious interplay of intricate electronics and precision mechanics. This fact has consistently motivated Sony's engineers through many years of labor to attain extraordinarily high levels of recording and replay accuracy, and the TC-399 is a glorious manifestation of this endeavor.

At the core of the TC-399's design lies an intricacy that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Equipped with three magnetic heads, including two pioneering F&F tape heads, Sony's engineers have crafted components with a service life that far surpasses that of ordinary magnetic heads, often exceeding up to 200 times their longevity. These heads not only boast remarkable durability but also deliver the highest acoustic qualities and maintain a linear frequency response, ensuring the utmost fidelity in audio reproduction.

The magnetic tapes that pass through the TC-399 are treated with great care, thanks to a novel tape tension management system. This innovation guarantees minimal synchronization fluctuations across all three operational speeds, ensuring that your cherished tapes remain in pristine condition. Moreover, the TC-399 provides you with the ability to tailor the technical characteristics of your magnetic tapes by allowing individual pre-selection of tape type based on equalization and pre-magnetization. This level of customization empowers you to attain a sound performance with a frequency response ranging from a deep 30Hz to a crisp 25,000Hz.

The TC-399 goes above and beyond in facilitating precise recording and playback adjustments. Two generously sized illuminated VU meters for input and output provide you with the means to regulate your audio with finesse. This empowers you to seamlessly blend your own microphone recordings into musical compositions or spoken word programs, offering unprecedented flexibility for mic/line mixing. With the added convenience of a built-in timer, the TC-399 allows you to schedule its operation, enabling recordings even in your absence. The one-button operation of the drive control ensures that transitioning between functions is effortless, rendering operational errors virtually non-existent.

In essence, the Sony TC-399 Tape Machine is still an audiophile's dream. Its blend of excellence and precision is nothing short of extraordinary, making it a cherished asset for anyone seeking top-tier audio quality. It is practically impossible for you not to like this top-class tape machine. Unless you want to go to the highest high-end.

Some of Sony's earlier small R2R's were kindo of underwhelming for looks but that changed in the late 70's with models like this one. Unfortunately R2R moved into the audiophile world in the 80's and we never got to see what could have been with the mid-level equipment.

I need to find one of those Sony Reels!
