This is just cool, unfortunately there's not a lot of photos but it might qualify as the world's oldest boombox if it takes batteries. It's a little over my budget but it would be a nice piece to own. I feel like this is also a very early portable stereo unit. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-ancetre-des-boombox-vintage-radio-phono-Crown-SPH-100-a-restaurer/272819286601?rt=nc&_trkparms=aid=222007&algo=SIM.MBE&ao=2&asc=47301&meid=61ff1252ffc04ffa80a84324998d9421&pid=100005&rk=4&rkt=6&sd=331815379275&itm=272819286601&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851 Rare ancestor of the vintage Crown SPH-100 phono boombox to restore Rare Radio Stereo Handset (OM - OC) - Turntables 60's Crown SPH 100 Stereo Radio Phonograph Record Player 12 Transistor Year made: around 1963 - Made in Japan
I found some more information on a Japanese Blog, it does take batteries, you slide out the AC unit and replace it with a battery pack. The depth of it is pretty reasonable, the top photo makes it look like it goes back a foot or so. https://translate.google.com/transl...iai1515.blog51.fc2.com/blog-entry-339.html?sp
Another Japanese Blog (I make and Restore), there's some other boomboxes on here as well. He mentions that they didn't start manufacturing cassettes in Japan until 1966. If you squint it almost looks like a Marantz PMS Box https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http://imakeandrestore.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-44.html&edit-text=
