Hi My Toshiba RT-s782 is jamming up tapes, i have had this sitting around for years and managed to find some new belts which i fitted and cleaned it up but it is still not working right, Any ideas please
Can you describe "jamming up tapes" better? Is the mech not engaging all the way or are the tapes getting "eaten?" If the transport is not moving correctly, I'd clean everything and relube all the moving parts. It's not as big an issue with newer equipment but the older players with sliding metal will bind up when the lube dries or gets sticky. Cool rare boombox!
Not sure on the technical term but the left spool is turning but the right one is intermittent and sometimes stops so the tape just unspools underneath
@Mister X He means the takeup reel rotates intermittently, probably not having enough takeup torque. There is another thread here where I gave some suggestions: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/toshiba-rt-s782-drive-belts-needed.10218/ I suspect there's an idler tire that connects the clutch to the takeup reel, which may be the reason for low takeup torque. But pictures don't have enough light in that area to know for sure. Apart from this the takeup reel itself or other rotating part may be hard to turn due to old grease, as it has been mentioned already. We need either a service manual or cleaner pictures with focus on the area I marked in green on the other thread.
Know the other thread is yours, that's why I put the link. Doing a search, was able to find another thread here showing more clear pictures of the mechanism: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/toshiba-rt-s782-mini-box.750/ Looks like there is no idler tire, but the clutch is connected to the takeup reel via gears. There are a couple of possibilities: 1. takeup reel is gummed up due to old grease and very hard to turn; 2. the secondary belt is loose and instead of the clutch slipping, the belt is slipping on the pulley; 3. Some teeth of the gears that drive the reel are broken; 4. Clutch itself is not tight enough, slipping too much; 5. Clutch assembly doesn't correctly engage with the gears; could be a grease issue, a missing spring, etc. Question is: if you put the unit in play without a cassette and try to stop the takeup reel by hand how much force does it take to stop it ? Do you hear any abnormal noise ? Broken gear teeth would create audible noise. FF and REW work fine ?
