The Walkman DD11 is one of the last DD Walkmans; one where Sony did away altogether with the large cogwheel (which started breaking even when these machines were still on sale). Pressing play here moves the play-head ass. directly. I got my DD11 cheap as it was malfunctioning in several ways: 1. A loud high pitched whining was heard in operation - changing several large electrolytes amended this. Tricky, but it could be done. 2. Someone else's previous attempts at speed regulation + repairs had destroyed the circuit board around the speed control potentiometer. The WM DD11 uses - also named IC 601 - a CX20084 for the speed control. Yet, the design here is somewhat simpler than in e.g. the D6C (e.g. no Quartz control as far as I could see). I soldered a replacement potentiometer directly to pins 4 and 5 via a resistor, shrink wrapped and glued into place. Speed was adjusted and it now works very well. Just thought I'd post if here for inspiration. Recap of a DD11 and potentiometer replacement can be done!
Hello and thanks for this post! I'm currently trying to fix my speed potentiometer and if everything fails I might try your solution as well. Is the resistor between the potentiometer and pin 4 the 47k resistor R603? Thanks!
Yes! Exactly, as I only had very thick cables at the time I made it like that. Best of luck! As I remember it, recapping was hardest...
Thanks for your answer! Yes I'm currently also doing the recapping, that's how I damaged the potentiometer in the first place ..... I hope I get it all running again. Only a three of the small capacitors and the potentiometer are left to do. Thank you!
Late update I finished the recapping and it works again! I also found a fitting potentiometer to replace the broken speed potentiometer. The only problem is the adjustment screw is on the opposite side of where it usually is so if I need to adjust the speed I have to move the main board out of the shell but that's okay since I won't need to adjust it again any time soon hopefully. When I put it back together I hadn't noticed that the Chrom/Fe switch had come loose and when i tried to put the shell back on it broke of the little switch ... If I want to switch between Chrome/Fe I have to open the shell and use a toothpick now, but luckily I'm not using that switch a lot anyways... well...I learned a lot and the main thing is the walkman works again which I'm very happy about.
