Just found a cool article on the movie, I loved it as a kid, the huge bright colors and art-deco spaceships were amazing. Queen put out the soundtrack, that has a wild back-story, and the keyboard background music made it a wild ride. Sure it was cheezy but there were a ton of really bad science fiction movies being cranked out at that time!
I love the movie remake of King Kong by De Laurentiis, I think this was his follow up? Sets by the same guy that did Caligula makes sense, that was also a wild movie, meant to be PG until someone in the edit room added "adult" scenes.
I'm biased ... Ornella Muti at the time made half of the Italian population fall in love ... and not only ... But Mariangela Melato also had a particular charm ........... Good times
I had to look up Mariangela Melato, I don't think she did much over here, I wonder if her voice was dubbed?
That movie, along with the 1984 Dune movie, proved that 80s films had awesome set designs and costumes. In contrast, most modern sci-fi films have dull, boring gray or gunmetal blue costumes, with a drab gray filter applied over everything to give it an artificially somber and dystopian look.
Nice! I've got the cassette, maybe the album also? around here. I wasn't a huge Queen Fan, they were pretty over-played at that time with songs everywhere but the hard rock music with synths fit the movie perfectly. Some of the costumes were fantastic but some, especially during the "football" scene were kind of goofy looking. One of the crew was previously the director of photography from Star Wars!
The Flash Gordon Pinball was one of my favorites, I used to play it for hours, I could beat that machine everytime. I think it was the first multi-level machine? https://pinside.com/pinball/machine/flash-gordon
A great film. If you like Flash Gordon but have never seen Babarella check it out. p.s Duran Duran must have liked the film as they took their Bands name from it.
I grew up next to a university, they had Friday and Saturday "obscure" movies for $1 USD, a solid deal back then. I saw so many movies before I turned 14 including Barbarella and some other classics like Clockwork Orange, Zardoz, Dark Star, Monty Python (I loved these) and so many more. That was a great time because we didn't have video tape yet so it was the only way to see the "classics." Those early movies that were cheesy with cool artsy sets were neat, it's tough to do it now without looking cliched. Those were good times!
Starlog has some good info on it, plus some pre-movie info on another favorite....Escape From New York! https://archive.org/details/starlog_magazine-041/mode/2up?view=theater
