Hello All

Hope you can help...one of boombox projects for next year is to replace the speakers in my GF-777 ! Can someone provides details of what the sizes of the existing speakers are, wattage, ohms, etc and how they are attached to internal case...some pictures would be a great help !

Also any guides to opening up a GF-777 would be very handy for a GF-777 newbie !

For reference, number of stores here in the UK are going to be having end of year sales and hence would like to pick up some replacement speaker bargins !

Well I would start by using a Screwdriver as opposed to a Hammer

the woofers are 6 1/2 inch ,the impedence is 4 ohms ,the back is easy to remove just take out the screws and gently pull the case cover off ,just remember to only pull it off far enough to disconnect the power wire plug and the antenna wires,then you can remove it safely.

Ahh Kid,you got one..i remember you was pretty despro to get your mits on one a coupla weeks ago,did you get it from ebay ? i only changed the outer speakers on mine,the outer speakers were 4ohm 7 watts max,i replaced them with another set of sharp,they were white,out of a Sharp Gx250,they were 4ohm 25 watts,sounds 100 times better now..these ones bounce the bass and stay clear,the origonal ones just flapped with not brilliant bass..

The center woofer mounting location will accept good size speakers but the outboard woofer location only has enough room for speakers about 2-3/8" deep or so. Beyond that (or if the magnets are larger than stock), you'll get into clearance issues with the transformer, which is mounted in the back corner.

Also, if the inner and outer speaker flanges are significantly different, understand that the bridge bracket may not mount properly and require washers or other modifications to allow proper support.

The GF-777 shell is quite thin and flexible. Resist the urge to eliminate the brackets when mounting replacement speakers. Otherwise shell cracking during heavy bassy use (or especially during shipping) is a real possibility.

Replacing the speakers on a 777 is a great project as they will 9 times out of 10 improve the sound quality greatly.

I replaced my outside speakers with a pair of Blaupunkt THc-172's. It's an easy job, even for someone new to the modding boxes scene, it was one of the first soldering jobs I did too.

I've done a lot of research on this and I'm about to do the same with my GF777. What I've learned is you would need 16.51 cm / 6.5 inch speakers which should be rated at 4 ohms. I'm sticking with 4 ohms because that is what the box was designed for. Some people have gone up to 6 ohms but that's more resistance and you lose volume when you start going outside what the box was designed for. There are also some that are rated at 2 ohms but I definetly would not go in that direction either. What I also noticed is the original speakers are custom to the box, so whatever speakers you choose to go with you will need to custom fit them. Do you have a factory service manual? If not, I can send you a copy of it. Also AKA: FATDOG on this site has some really good documentation on how to take apart the box. You'll just need to search for it.
