Homemade JC2000 Tape Deck Buttons

gluecifer - 2008-06-25 07:56

I thought I'd make some placeholder ones until I can get some genuine replacement ones.

They do the job nice and smoothly, unfortunately deck A isn't functioning.. but B is running perfectly.

Rock On.

Well... you have to tell us what you did. Roll Eyes How did you make them? All the buttons look nice, but I don't know which are original.

gluecifer - 2008-06-25 08:29

All the buttons on both tape decks were replaced... I removed all the original ones when I gave up trying to match their design exactly.

They're a Macgyvered up combination of signwriters chrome, antenna aerial, super glue, hot glue and the most important part: LEGO!

The greatest toy mankind ever produced is also perfect for using as a sturdy base to scratchbuild almost anything from. It's light, strong and bonds like a weld with any super glue/cyanoacrylate.

DAMN! Who needs originals?!?!?! You may have a market for yourself there! Nod Yes

skippy1969 - 2008-06-26 18:36

They look great! I would'nt have known any difference if you had not told us. Eek Wink

You could start making and selling out those pieces

Cool

What oldskool said, "DAMN!" Cool

gluecifer - 2008-06-28 03:51

Thanks muchly for the kudos brethren. Reworked them this evening.

I've redesigned them slightly. Got rid of the antenna tube sections that the buttons pivot on and replaced them with some more flexible coax cable shielding instead, which has made for much better movement. Also added some support blocks so theres zero chance of any button breakage through normal use.

Shame I can't get deck 1 going, but I'm happy with my progress so far. One step at a time.

Rock On.

I Agree on both counts.

gluecifer - 2008-07-18 09:55

Signwriters Chrome is a fancy name for high quality self adhesive plastic. Signwriters stuff though is made to be weather/sun proof for years though and is a lot more hard wearing than your usual self adhesives. This is also almost impossibly thin, so adding layers adds very little bulk to the buttons.

It's also a virtually seamleess mend for scratched, worn, or missing chrome on parts.

Really happy with them still, and very pleased you guys are liking them too. They're still working as well, which is the main thing.

And jameswp67 needs to check his pm.

Rock On.

Well done! I just got a Sharp VZ 2000 with a lot of missing buttons and you're inspiring me.

I think this would also work for custom buttons:

Advantage: it also comes in silver. What do you think?
