Problem with PC-5 finding Stereo on FM

sdbobbyt - 2009-02-24 22:04

My PC-5 is having problems finding stereo when I tune radio stations. I can press the stereo button a few times then it can go to stereo if signal is good. Otherwise it just stays Mono.

Am I missing something here? Is there an adjustment to widen the stereo capture? Or perhaps a fix?

Please advise.

I had a similar problem with a magnavox D8443. I would try cleaning tuner Smile Or maybe deoxit the stereo switch Cool

Take the boombox apart and on the tuner circuit board you should find a variable resistor labelled 'VR-1'. Grab a small screwdriver and turn the component slowly until the box recieves stereo all the time the selector's in the stereo position. That will sort the problem.

I'll do those things and let y'all know.

Thanks.

Awesome! Taking the tuner apart and finding then moving the VR-1 screw to the left a tad worked!

You are definitely the one with da skilz! Much appreciation.

There was some black goo that got all over my hands (won't come off them either) was on the spindle, what is that all about? Got on the front and top of the box. Cleaned most of it.

If that black goo came off the cassette spindle, it's probably the remnants of an old belt or maybe a goo-ified capstan tire.

Glad to hear that the stereo problem is fixed!

Glad it worked for you, SDBOBBYT! Cool

I Agree I've had that stuff on my hands also after trying to fix an old Philips tape recorder. It's horrible sticky stuff.

Probably not... the tuner is a completely different "box' than the deck in a PC-5. Probably just old bong residue....
