Volume actually goes up when dial turned down

reli - 2008-06-05 16:43

I have a boombox that sounds good, but if you adjust the volume all the way down to zero, it suddenly becomes very loud. Pretty annoying to say the least. It also scratches badly. How would I fix this?

skippy1969 - 2008-06-05 18:25

Just get a good quality tuner cleaner with built in lubricant and spray it,like from RadioShack. It's just a dirty pot. Big Grin Nod Yes

Could be more though. I did the deOxit yadda yadda and it still did it. I hope it works as mine (Sharp WF-939z) needed more TLC to resolve it and is in for repair. Smile

skippy, what is a pot? Sorry, I slept through high school electronics class

Regardless of the class, I slept through high school! Or maybe I was just high? Laugh Out Loud

by the way this is a slider-style volume switch

skippy1969 - 2008-06-05 20:23

Same thing but different,LOL! Just clean the slider then, that should make it work fine. Nod Yes

Smiletry deoxit gold tuner cleaner,my jvc pc 37 did the same thing 2 short deoxit treatments,it's boomin' like new

reli - 2008-06-05 22:13

So I take apart the box, and spray that stuff on the underside of the switch?

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-05 22:40

if u have sliders spray the under neath of the sliders.
Deoxit Gold is the best. Sorry to disagree with skip, but the contact cleaner from rs is very weak.
It's cheaper 8.99-10.99 per can where as deoxit goes for upwards of $20 plus, reason it's way way way better.

MG chemicals is less expensive,

better than rat shack stuff

moncheeto - 2008-09-24 22:10

i had a box that did the same thing put some cleaner and still had the problem on inspection i decided to open the slider just to find a missing trace inside the slider..i fixed it with a circuit writer pen so if the cleaner does not work then you may need to try to fix or replace Nod Yes

ford93 - 2008-09-25 11:12

I likey your avatar Dormie. Nod Yes

Not Me I Scored a A+ in Electronic's Class Wink Big Grin Nod Yes Cool

"Pot" in electronic's speak = Potentiometer and to quote from here: Potentiometer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about the electrical component. For the measuring instrument, see Potentiometer (measuring instrument).
A potentiometer is a three-terminal resistor with a sliding contact that forms an adjustable voltage divider.[1] If only two terminals are used (one side and the wiper), it acts as a variable resistor or Rheostat. Potentiometers are commonly used to control electrical devices such as a volume control of a radio. Potentiometers operated by a mechanism can be used as position transducers, for example, in a joystick.

Construction of a wire-wound circular potentiometer. The resistive element (1) of the shown device is trapezoidal, giving a non-linear relationship between resistance and turn angle. The wiper (3) rotates with the axis (4), providing the changeable resistance between the wiper contact (6) and the fixed contacts (5) and (9). The vertical position of the axis is fixed in the body (2) with the ring (7) (below) and the bolt (8) (above).Potentiometers are rarely used to directly control significant power (more than a watt). Instead they are used to adjust the level of analog signals (e.g. volume controls on audio equipment), and as control inputs for electronic circuits. For example, a light dimmer uses a potentiometer to control the switching of a triac and so indirectly control the brightness of lamps.

Potentiometers are sometimes provided with one or more switches mounted on the same shaft. For instance, when attached to a volume control, the knob can also function as an on/off switch at the lowest volume.
