Has anyone taken one of these apart? I've spent the last couple of days attempting to get inside to fix up the tape deck but even with every visible screw removed the front barely moves. Am I missing some clip device or something that could be holding it together?
I've separated the speakers and the amp from the middle section and taken all the screws out and am stumped as where to look next.

I'm convinced it just needs a clean to get the cassette deck going again as the entire unit had this incredibly fine dust all over it. The inside of the deck looked like it was coated in flour. I'm almost certain this dust had gotten all gunked up and is prevent the gears/motors from moving properly over the years. Even some random applications of servisol in the deck got it slowly moving, so being able to clean inside it would be the next logical step.

Any other ideas would be very gratiously appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Where did you get that?!?!?! Look at the cassette frame housing. You will generally have four to six scres holding it in. It may also have something holding it to an assembly with the door.

I picked her up off australian ebay. It was listed incorrectly and it was something I just had to make my own. She doesn't seem too common especially based on the little information I could find anyway.

It's not all beer and skittles though, the speakers need re-foaming (will send them away this week) as the seller only tested it at low volume before listing. But believe me, when I got her here and fired her up the sound was incredible before the rotted foam disintergrated entirely, just after the above picture was taken...

Can't wait to get her back up and running though. It's definitely well up to the standard of Denon's other products, that's for sure.

I've seen them but overseas only. Never have in the 'States. I would venture to say that these component portables were more popular in Europe and Asia where space was a premium.

G'day Gluecifer. If you havent already you need to take the ground screw out of the back. It turns one way to secure a ground wire for phono and turns the other way to release the screw from the back. Took me for ever to find that this was the only thing still holding it together when i did mine !! Just had my speakers repaired too and it sounds pretty good. I also really like the cassette holder space they put on the top. Anyway good luck and i hope this helps.

Hahah, indeed that was my second-to-last discovery. It was those wacky looking black plugs around the antenna connector that proved to be the last things holding her together.

Turn out the belts are (as usual) the culprit so will e getting those replaced next week.

Ahh yes, I found that image on here before I bidded on her, it was in fact instrumental in piquing my interest enough to bid.

The japanese domestic model has a few interesting little features that aren't on the .eu/.au one, especially that little red digital number looking one in the centre.

Of note is the gimmick with this system where the amp component on the bottom detaches and unplugs from the cassette/tuner section which can then be powered by batteries and used as some kind of giant sized walkman with headphones. Hence the guy having that part attached to his hang glider in the image. Clever idea,.. but not especially practical.

I have an H-5 as well, I love mine, found it in near mint condition on ebay, it does perform very well, and I love rare boxes and Denon products so...a no brainer! Congrats! I hope the two of you love yours as well!

Well I refoamed the speakers today thanks to the kit from speakerbits.com and put her all back together and I can not believe the quality of audio this thing cranks out. The fidelity is incredible, I'd say it sounds more natural and warm than any portable I've heard so far (I must qualify this by saying I've not heard many, but this sounds nothing like a portable at all).

Really happy that I didn't bugger the speakers up trying this little experiment. Just need to get her rebelted next week and then I can sit back and really appreciate her golden tones.
