Problems with a Sanyo M9994

kanamaster - 2008-05-05 14:30

I had written what comes below as a Reply in another discussion I had open before BUT with a different topic. That's why I thought it was more reasonable to open a new line for it.
.............................

Hello everybody again!
Do you remember that I told you I was waiting for a M9994 to arrive to my house? Well, it did since a few days ago. It arrived in very good cosmetic conditions. But.... as soon as I opened the package I realized that there was no power cable. I sent an email to the seller telling about it. One or two days later I managed to get a suitable cable for powering up the recorder. Good! It did! The radio worked perfectly. All the bands. All knobs. All controls. And a super sound, as it is to expect from this equipment. Next, I grabbed a cassette, put it in, pressed PLAY..... Great! It worked as it had to. And no wow that I could hear. Everything was OK.... until I tested the REWIND button. When I press it, both hubs rotate in opposite directions!!
Then I tested the RECORD function with the radio as a source..... failure! When I presse both PLAY and RECORD the audio goes off, and of course, when I play back theres is nothing recorded. So, thanks to this nice and kind eBay seller --who sent me the classical answer of "I tested verything here before sending it and there were no problems"-- I have two problems:
1.- The two hubs rotating at the same time and in opposite directions during Rewind.
2.- The deactivation of audio at the time of recording.
So, in this situation I think I will need your help according to your experience. What do you think it could be the cause of the first problem? I was thinkg that perhaps someone tried to change a broken belt, and at the time of mounting it, he didn't put them -or at least one of them-- in the right position. Or could it be a matter of some little electronic swith that goes on in the wrong moment?
What about problem # 2?
Maybe someone can help with pictures of the right way the belts should be mounted, so I can see them and compare with the positiion they have in mine.
I really really hope I can get any help from you.
Thanks in adavnce for any ideas of suggestions.

well it looks like the one of the belts is put on wrong it could be going under the wheel when it should run on top not a biggie now the other problem could be a few things which would have to sort out little by little cleaning all swithes and and main record and play switch to make sure they are clean

Hello, and thanks for your answer. I don't understand very well what you mean.....

moncheeto - 2008-05-07 10:24

what i mean is the belt should be going around the plastic pulley or in some cases under it when the belts are turning lets say clockwise that pulley will turn in the same direction if the belt sit under the pulley the pulley would turn counterclockwise so we have to make sure the are put on correctly so it turns in the dirrection intended, there was a picture that someone posted awhile back that shows the deck look though the older post i think it says something about sanyo9994k belt replacement go back to the tech section go to the bottom of page click page 4 when it opens go to the bottom and open it up you should see some pics of the 9994

Thanks a lot Ramon. I already saved the pictures. I will also take some of my recorder opened and could post them here or send you the links in a PM so you can see the way the belts are.
(By the way, are you Spanish, Mexican, or something like that? Because of your name Ramon.)

Hello Ramon!
I put here a couple of pictures I took after I opened my recorder. I want to show you what I see. In the first picture you have a general view of the "heart" of the thing, so you can observe if they are in the right position or not. We can see --let's say so-- three "sections". Ther upper section with more bright in the picture, the middle section with black marks from the belt, and the bottom section, down under. The belt is actually mounted on this "middle section". My question is: Is it the right place for the belt, or should it go mounted on the so called upper section? I don't want to do anything until I know if the belts are mounted in the right position and on the right slots.
I hope you or someone else can help me abput it. If more pictures are needed just tell me.
Regards.

Now this second picture shows a detailed view of the hub for the FORWARD, the one that rotates counterclockwise when pressing the REWIND button. And here, I see that maybe the belt is running under the slot where it should be and not on it.

Well..... After posting the pictures I must say that I took a look again with a magnifying glass, and I now I'm not sure that there are those "three sections" from which I was previously speaking. Maybe there are only two, separated by a kind of clutch I think. In that case, the belt is running on the bottom part.

I'm also thinking that I could make a short video and upload it to YouTube, so you can appreciate what goes on when pressing the different buttons.

The problem with the opposite rotation of the take-up reel might result from its friction malfunction. On the last photo, the lower part of the hub always rotates CCW driven by the lower belt. In the play mode, the upper part of the hub is rotated by the lower one since it is pressed to the latter by the fork-shaped arm seen above. For better friction felt washers are glued to both upper and lower parts. Normally, without pressure, friction is not enough to make them rotate as one. With time some dirt might have accumulated inside the hub, so maybe it needs some cleaning.

i can see that that bottom belt needs replacing mine had trouble which i thought it was that felt it turned out to be the belt slipping i replaced it with a smaller diameter belt nice and tight and she works beautiful. kanamaster they look in the correct place you need to change those belt especally the bottom one and i am more than sure it will work better......

Hello back!
Thanks for your ideas. Let's see how I can get to that belt. May be this video helps to see better what goes on. Click here --> VIDEO
