just bought 2 new boxes thought i would mention it incase any one has the same box and needs to make a repair, 1 is the little hitachi super woofer which i have been over and its mint so that i need not touch, and the other a hitachi trk 8300 which i think is a really nice box for its size.
the trk8300 is cosmeticaly very nice and well looked after, but this model has a little quarts programmer on it for time and timer (wake up and sleep) unfortunately this part didnt work, so stripped out and found some very corroded terminals (i knew about this at purchase and dont consider it a big deal) anyway cleaned up the contacts on 3 of them and the 4th one i made a copy as it was to far gone and now i fit some batteries to the clean terminals (2xAA) the programmer lights up but the digits did not appear correctly parts missing, so i stripped out the screen and it has a little rubber contact strip which had curled and shrunk over the years, so a bit of heat and it returned to shape and then i packed the backplate with some neatly folded paper to raise the lcd to make the contact, reasembled and it works fine (tried the timer it all works) it switches whatever function you used last on so you can wake to tape or radio.
degreased the cabinet and blew out all the dust with airline then cleaned all the switch contacts (dont crackle anymore) now i cleaned all the grills out, then the tape deck worked and the belt seems ok but it was a little muffled so cleaned the head and capstan with some alchohol and then realined the head with a tape known to be clear.
now sit back and smile sounds great and works perfect a great buy i think.

Way to go on the Hitachi and your right it's not a bad looking box at all. Oldskool I am a lazy bum when it comes to my boxes, I have a lot of projects waiting for me.
I've had a couple of boxes that the seller said the clock was broken on. Everytime the clock worked fine it just needed a battery or the battery compartment needed cleaning.
