M-90 vs JVC Kaboom RV-NB10.

ford93 - 2008-03-22 14:09

Well today I tested both the M-90 and the JVC Kaboom RV-NB10 here are the results:

Tuner: the M-90 picks up stations very good, as the Kaboom as you all know it's a new boombox so it had no problems.

Tape Deck: the M-90 it's a bit clunky but FF/REW is a lot faster, also the M-90 has a very good feature which is the ANRS Dolby B and Super ANRS which really enhances the sound quality when switched on Super ANRS. The Kaboom has none.

Sound Quality: the M-90 performed well the mids and highs were extreme lows was tight. The Kabooms lacks big time on the mids and highs, but on lows it really thumps. The Kaboom has has a cool feature like the Active Clear Sound & Sound select mode which helps enhance the sound.

I tested with the Kaboom set on 24 and the M-90 set on 4 volume wise, the M-90 is much louder where as the Kaboom it just has more bass. Both radios were placed at the kitchen counter 19" away from the wall. The Kaboom could be placed anywhere and you could still hear that deep bass where as the M-90 if you place it in the middle of the room you just get more mids and highs. I believe this is because of the Kaboom enclosure which helps alot in the bass section.

To me the M-90 has a lot more going with features and looks, where as the Kaboom it does have some features and yes it does have good bass, but overall I pick the M-90 it's just more of a boombox with a little HiFi not to mention the M-90 for it's age it still kicks ass. If JVC would have dedicated a little more in the mids. and highs on the Kaboom than it would have been a tougher box to beat!

I know some of you are wondering why compare the M-90 to a Kaboom box, well just in case if anyone is curious. Smile

i also thank you , ford --
--- thought i was the only member who did that comparo Smile

agree 100% -

EXCEPT the kaboom does have one incredible feature which no other box has (that i know about):::

if you hide your kaboom in some dark corner -- and under anything --

then turn the bass boost to the max -- keep the volume real low --
you can hear and FEEL the bass power - all over your house !!

and for that reason -- its the very best box to use as THE SUB -- while running any other box at the same time

the m90 has tremendus output no doubt ,it has an in your face blast of sound thats hard to match , i dont think that many of the newer boxes represent hi fidelity at it's best like some of the older boxes ,the m90 package is hard to beat on a size, power, features ,sound , wieght ,build quality scale.i mean for its size it just rules in that class.i mean it looks like a world war 2 army tank but thats what i love about it.

Nice comparison Cool .
Old tech vs newer tech.
I used to have a kaboom before I got into the hobby.
I was amazed when I first listened to it in the store some 9 years ago!!!
Incredible sound in a small yet heavy package.
I gave it to a co-worker about a year ago and he had it busted within a week of me giving it to him Roll Eyes .
Had I known that I would have never given it away. Frown
As much as I loved the Kaboom I wouldnt trade my M-90 for one ever. Wink

Believe me Red I had both playing at the same time and the floor was trembeling. I will never get enough from my M-90. I also like the Kaboom for the bass, it is without a doubt the strongest I've ever heard. If only JVC would get on the band wagon as Lasonic and develop an M-90 with all the new technology and improve on the bass section would'nt that be something!

moncheeto - 2008-03-22 18:57

well i agree to all i have both and love them both alot and yes the kaboom to me is the winner in real bone shaking bass but the m90 has a good tight bass and good mid and highs which the kaboom lacks Smile

redbenjoe - 2008-03-22 19:15

I Agree with EVERYBODY on this one !

and ford - i have been hoping that the brand new lasonic would see huge $$$ success --

-- if that sold out fast
then i think JVC would be encouraged to do likewise --

and re-create the M90

Thanks ford! I enjoy the new school vs. oldschool views. It is especially interesting given the path and focus JVC chose versus it's only surviving rival in boomboxes, Panasonic. Big Grin

Good comparison Cool

To me, the M90 is what I listen to when I want QUALITY sound...when I want QUANTITY sound (e.g. LOUDNESS, BASS) then the KB gets turned on, it's as simple as that Cool

I will be going to a few VW weekend car shows this year so naturally my Army green Kaboom will be there..there is no way I would even consider taking my M90..as portable as it is it never leaves the house! The risk is too great! Big Grin

manley --thats why a beater M90 may be the best and most enjoyed box of all Smile

O.K. oldskool I may just try a comparison, the M-90 against Panasonic RX-DT680 we'll see who gets the cake!

I Agree Manley my Kaboom will be the box for everyday use. Once every so often I turn on the M-90 just to keep it in tuned and when I do I still get in Aw of just how good she sounds!

Better get some extra icing. I really like the M90, but it's design is it's handicap. The deck will spank the Panny' because of Super ANRS & Dolby, and an analog tuner whoops a digital every time, BUT...

That Bi-Wired, XBS Equalized, Bass Reflexed Cabinetized, sound will nearly bake the M90. Laugh Out Loud

I am preparing my next reviews feturing the RX-C100, the DT-680. The comparo will be mid to late April. Big Grin

That was so cool, fresh and new to me, everything on the site is new to me but I really thought this was cool (just as cool as your old &new photo). I guess it's something that has been done in the past ? Regardless it was cool and very informative it also let's people who have never hear either box know a little more about both and how AWESOME they sound together. I must admit that such a video can be very bad in some cases as I can see myself in future arguments about why I must have not one but two more BBX's LOL

Great Stuff : ) Thanks for sharing

Excelent test !!!

Ford, great comparison and a simple but informative review. I also like to hear Old vs. New reviews of which there is a lot of room for more. Again the M90 proves it's worth as one of the top true boomboxes of all time. Big Grin
