Hi all,
I have recently replaced the outher woofers in my GF777 with the following 2-way speakers:
Infinity Reference 6512si
4 ohm impedance
Sensitivity - 92dB
Frequency Response - 58Hz-21kHz
RMS - 50w
NOTE - this is my chief 'party box' so gets the most use at higher volumes, and the deviation from original is something I am only doing on this particular unit as the outers were shot.
So, it sounds great at the moment, and I am contemplating chucking another 2 in the centre to handle the bass, and give a more uniform look.
I have seen some historic threads from others who have done this, although I've not found one that indicates whether 4 x 2-way is the best option for a balanced sound.
My question(s) - do you think the speakers I mention will be able to handle the bass going through the centres and sound better that the silver capped woofers that sit there now?
Will I lose any low end?
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks for reading.
Ewen
I would imagine that the Infinity speakers would be able to handle the center positions. The only thing I would worry about would be "high frequency overload." The GF-777 definitely needs more treble, but the two 2-way outside speakers should be sufficient. Look for some sensitive 4-ohm mid-woofers and let it crank. Remember, the GF-777 only puts out a max of around 28W total, so you don't need 500W woofers.

Thanks FD - it appears you are are the voice of the masses!
Ok - job done - the same Infinity's (I had four already so why not use em') are now housed in the centre.
I can't go over a third tonight or the elderly couple next door will fuss, but so far the sound is ultra crisp and tight...awesome. I'll crank it a little more tomorrow and see what happens.
One thing I did notice - once I'd fired it back up again, the left channel didn't function at all (for ref, I am using ipod line in), I pulled it out, went to radio, fiddled with volume, and plugged in again - that sorted it. It seems the volume control is a little 'scratchy', and the fiddling with it is what re-engaged the left channel.. is that something I need to worry about?
Cheers guys.
Your controls probably need some cleaning. Nothing major from what you described.
A little Servisol Super 10 Switch Cleaner will clear up that scratchiness.

Boombox speakers are different from HIFI speakers as they have a magnetic shield on them.
This so that the magnets will not effect the cassette tapes.
You can check this with a screwdriver.
If the screwdriver sticks hard to the magnet do not use it in a boombox.
