Tom,usually that is a sign that the belts are junk. Usually the reason the motor is stuck on is when you press play the motor was turned on to engage play and raise the play/record heads to the operating position and the belt fell off or is slipping. This is most common with full logic or soft touch controlled decks. That is usually why you can hear the motor running. Usually when you turn the main flywheel a bit the play/record heads will drop to their parked position and turn off the motor.

I will also add that the tape heads don't have to be in the raised position for the motor to be running, the aiwa 600 I just bought was doing the same thing and the heads were down, just had to open it up and rotate the flywheel and it stopped.
Yup ,Tony is correct. It just depends how the deck is set up and where the motors microswitch is located in the cassette drive.

than I bought new belts and now it is perfect.
all of it is totaly correct
