I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but if the springs in the battery compartment are rusty, the boombox woun't work with batteries right?

some time yes sometimes no. just depends on how rusted. you should clean them anyways thou

Oh yeah, that coil is very rusty.

If you've got an old toothbrush at home, dip it in a little alcohol, and give the coils a good scrubbing. That should do the trick!!!
