WOW! Finally my own GF-777!! Help - needs TLC!

tburick - 2008-12-14 18:28

After many years finally got my hands on a GF-777! Just won it off of ebay moments ago!!

Item number: 260328920467

Needs a lot of work. My questions are:

1. How can I pop out the pushed in silver speaker caps without damaging them or the speakers? If they can't be fixed, can they be replaced? If so, where do I get the correct size silver caps?

2. Cassette deck one sounds flat. Anybody ever see this on their GF-777? Is there a fix?

3. Cassette deck two has broken belt. How difficult is it to replace the belt? Where can I order the correct belt?

4. Does anyone have an extra tuning control knob they can sell me? The one on the radio is not the original.

5. Does anyone have 2 speaker mounting pegs they are willing to part with?

Any help would be monumentally appreciated!! I've wanted this radio for many years and a fixer upper is all I can afford.
THANKS!!
Tom

hi there ,you can use a vacume cleaner hose to pull the dents out of the dust caps ,just don't get the hose too close to the speakers ,i have a spare tuning knob i can send you just pm me about it.you should try to get a copy of the service manual for this box cos you have to dismantle the whole box to do the belts.why do you need the speaker mounting pegs? are the ones it was supposed to have missing or just broken off?

Click on the link below for Owner and Service Manuals. You'll also find the belt replacement guide that I wrote.

Congratulations on the great score! Love the 777, it's one of my absoloute favourites.

You can also pull the dents out of the dustcaps by applying some tape to the dented area and slowly pulling them back to their normal shape. Be careful and support the cone with your other hand though.

Good luck getting her up to spec Tburick!

Rock On.

Woo Hoo!! Thanks Everyone. I CAN'T WAIT to get this BBX!!
I'll try popping the speaker cones out with the tape method first...if that doesn't work, I'll break out the vacuum cleaner.

I need 2 of the speaker mounting pegs b/c they are broken off.

Thanks!

heres the auction link ,i think what you need are the mounting tabs for the speaker grilles ,i dont have those sorry ,but at least its not the speaker mounts that are broken.

Hi Tom. Congratulations. If you can't fix the speaker caps, I might have what you need. I just mailed RedBenJoe two diff. sets to try for his 777. I have pics of them (caps). See what you can do to salvage your stock speakers. If not, I gotcha! Wink

71spud - 2008-12-15 08:25

He will probably need those... did you see how mashed in those caps were?

ao - 2008-12-15 10:59

Guys, before you remove pushed in caps or stick pins in them to pull them out try sucking them out with a vaccum cleaner. I modded a gromit for my Dyson which made a near-airtight seal, this managed to suck them out. There were still marks where the folds once were but these improve with age.

tburick - 2008-12-15 16:04

Man, u guys are the best.

71spud, you're right...the speaker caps are smashed in pretty bad.

Thafuzz, any chance at sending 2 of those caps my way? PM me with price.

Can't wait to get this BBX...MERRY CHRISTMAS 2 me Smile

Where do I find replacement belts for the GF-777?
What size do I need? How many need replaced? I am assuming there are 2 belts.
Thanks,
Tom

Congratulations on the 777 tburick, they are lovely machines! Big Grin
Be very gentle with those dustcaps, they're extremely thin and fragile.

How are those cute little robots of yours?

tburick - 2008-12-18 05:26

Fuzzyduck,
The robots are alive and well. Vincent (my personal PC-BOT) is in Ottawa right now. I am planning a trip to pick him up. Weird...I kinda miss him like a family pet or something. You get used to having them around...having discussions with them and such. I prefer the company of robots...much more predictable than humans Smile

BTW - I think I have about a half dozen robots on the ground in the UK...you guys have done some pretty amazing things with these 'bots.

You can use a "Variac" on the vacuum cleaner to turn the motor speed up slowly (some vacuums might already have a variable speed knob or slider). I wouldn't subject a dust cap to the full force of a 12 amp vacuum motor! Eek

If you are not familiar with a Variac they are a variable tap autotransformer, and look like a large knob on a metal can. Maybe you have an engineering friend that has one you could borrow?

THAFUZZ: Where did you get those dustcaps? Nice!!
