Whizz-r without?

IF YOU HATE T*RDS,DO NOT READ THIS POST!

Some time ago,I was able on separate occasions to pick up two very similar boxes seen in the picture below. These were the Sony CFD-808 (top) and Sony CFD-17 (bottom).I paid $6.00 for the "808" and the "17" was free. The "808" has strange sounding sloppy bass so I got the "17" to do a comparison to see if the cones were bad on the "808".

Both of these boxes have the "mega-bass" feature. The only difference I can see is the auto reverse deck on the "17".

Today while thrifting,I ran across this very similar Sony CFD-8.Not intending to buy it,I just took this picture.

As you can see,it lacks the "mega-bass" feature. Most obvious, however,is the fact that this version has chrome speaker caps instead of the "whizzer" cones found on the 2 variants I own.Now I wish I had listened to this radio to see how different it would sound not having the "whizzers".My whizzer equipped versions have really sharp highs though the sound of these boxes is not very well detailed (they really rather "shriek").My questions? "Are there any other boxes out there with "whizzers"?Are there boomboxes that make good use of this design? Also,do "whizzer" cones appear in home loudspeaker designs? If so are there good sounding examples of these?

For awhile the series of Platinum Collection boxes from Panasonic had whizzers on the sole 6.5" speaker (per cabinet, it was a three piece unit). Never heard one though...

Some very high efficiency speakers for tube amplifiers have whizzers. Some Fostex full-range speakers have whizzers and are highly regarded.

In my brief experience with whizzers, I agree, they do tend to shout at you. Eek

I've been meaning to get some of the Fostex speakers to listen and see if they are better.

What analogboi said basically!

I have found whizzers to have an up front sound as well, not an emphasis on highs so much as the upper mids. I guess they could sound tiresome on brighter sounding stuff such as CD's that were released in the eighties.
Saying that whizzers have been used successfully in HiFi component speakers, such as Lowther.
