had a few good ones -and they just dont have the bass kick at low volume --the loudness switch still doesnt really do it --
we all agree these are great looking --VERY solid boxes -- and the perfect 'carry around ' size -
but but but ..... they need more than that !
so , has anyone found the formula to kick -start these ??
thank you
great link -- THANKS alot.
hope i was not insulting the huge world of M70 fans --
but they do suck at low volume bass output !!!
No insults taken here... I almost always tweak the amps or preamps (tone controls, gain, etc.) on boxes that I am goin to keep. That's where the service manuals come in REAL handy. It would be nice if an older bbx had a parametric eq. That way you could find just the right frequencies and adjust to your liking. Most people (friends anyway) are intimidated by parametric eqs because they let you adjust (or screw up) almost everything.
I totally agree Redbenjoe and have posted about this in the past.Generally speaking I prefer boxes that can have balanced sound at any volume. The M70 is only amazing when pushed really hard. This limits its usability. Its not the kind of box to fit a variety of moods.I don't always want to blast these things.
well i feel the same way i always said that the sanyo 9994k and the 9998 had better bass than the m70
I feel the same way, between the lines m70 revews have never been that good so i havn't bought one.
jovie and ramon -- the list of boxes that have a much better low end bass ,that i have heard is enormous --add to those two sanyos ::
crown 850 and 950 and those 2 cool ge jobs; 6000 and 6035 , and the sears 2199 and EVERY AIWA!!
and the lasonic 918 and 920 and, and and .....
----
when i bought mt first m70 -- i thought i had a factory defect --and sold it --
bought a second one -- exact same story - sold it !! --
third one -- sounded exactly like the first two
but still have it -- because of its great looks and built quality and its just the right size --
then -- i compared it to ramons --
same story
then ----
made this thread - to see if anyone had the mod formula.
anyhow --except for the bass --its the ultimate 'whats not to like box'
I dont like the m70 for another reason ira the cassette keys are on the top of the box, that makes it look so cheap to me cuz all the good boxes back then at leas when i was younger had the tape keys on the front thats just my own humble opinion though.
funny, tim -- never even thought about that
but anyway -- most collectors must not agree with us --
because i will guess that the JVC M70 is the absolute most successful and most popular box in the world !!!
a nice just sold over here for USD$1000 last night.
How does the 880 compare to the m70 ira ?i guess it is much better is that the case, reason i ask cuz its in the same size legue as the m70.
well - the 880 has that 'stupid'
"warm bass"
but --your warm bass is 50 times better than NO bass

i realy have to get an m70 some day cuz i have had just about every model jvc there is another i must get is the m80 i just hope the 80 sounds better than the 60 that was diplorable you wouldn't happen to own an m80 would you ira?.
nope -
-they do come up on usa ebay often --but , just like with you - our best source of information is reading posts on s2g --
and have not seen many big fans of the M80 sound quality -
plus --it has a digital tuner --and , for me -they never work as well as analogues
I've never heard an M90.If I compare my JVCs,the M70,M50,and 656 CII,I prefer the balance of the 656 the most. This is even though it is the lowest powered and has the smallest drivers of the three. For me its all about balance. If a boombox does one thing well but lacks good balance its just not as listenable. This is why I'm quite sure I would have no use for a Kaboom.
To me the Crown CSC-850 has a spacey sort of boom to it.It is probably my favorite box for bass as it imparts a unique character or environment to what it produces. It doesn't just bump. This sort of reminds me of some of those big home speakers with the oversized woofers from the late '70s/early '80s.
The G.E. 3-6000/6035 models are two of the most amazing sleepers out there with very strong bass. They are deceptively thin from front to back. These are my absolute favorite sounding 1-piece G.E.s despite their minimal list of features and sleek refined looks.I also agree with Redbenjoe about the Sears 2199.Those go for literally nothing on Ebay.An amazing deal!
My Lasonic 918 is certainly a unique sounding box.Though I agree it has good bass,I personally don't feel it is a particularly bass heavy box.Where this box shines is rock.Electric guitar sounds are featured and have an edge. This kind of music is electrifying and exciting over a 918.
I do think all of these boxes have better low volume bass (and balance as a result) despite them having varying lower overall musical fidelity than an M70.However for me I'm not necessarily looking for high fidelity in a boombox. As long as its balance is good,I'd rather have a characteristically unique sound. That's what boomboxes have always been about anyway. And all of these are wonderful sounding boxes!
jovie -- as you like balance -- then you sure would hate a kaboom
however - if you get a chance to pick up a beater kaboom --or one without the remote --
which will then be about $100 --
and then hide it in a corner --and play it along with any box --
then you WILL like it --really.

and, btw - we both forget to add the rising 20/20 to the list of great low end bass boxes.

if you like that box you'll love the m90
