Re: Rechargable Batteries

I have a question regarding rechargable batteries. What do you guys recommend on the subject and why? Which will last longer for extended high volume play. I ask because buying 10 D batteries all the time will become very expensive. Thanks in advance.

Generally, any good name-brand rechargeable battery should work well for you. Rechargeable battery technology has advanced considerably in recent years, three of the most significant innovations are no "memory effect" meaning that you can recharge or "top off" their charge at any time. Another is the increased mAh ratings that are now available, enabling them to perform substantially longer, under more demanding conditions, and with wider temperature variations. Just right for what you have in mind. Look for batteries with the highest mAh ratings, as several options are available, the higher the number, the longer it's life. There are many brands out there, so shop around for the best deal. Here are a couple of links, hope you find them helpful.

Rechargeable Ni-MH D cells. You can buy a set of 10 with charger on ebay for around $60 or $70. Don't worry about the 1.2 volt rating since they maintain that voltage througout the charge. Alkalines may start at 1.5 volts but they drop voltage as they are used and actually end up below 1.2 volts towards the end of their charge.

I wouldn't do ebay. I bought 10 Tenergy NiMH 9000mAh D cells for my TRC-931 about 3 years ago. Got them from http://www.all-battery.com for $58.99 and their fast charger for $29.99. They are fantastic! Not only do they last forever, but they deliver more juice than your standard D cell, too.

They're up to 10000mAh capacity now, and I would definitely recommend them.

I ended up getting these in the mail yesterday:

Rechargeable D size alkalines

I needed 10 as well, plus I got 4 c-cells for portable shower CD player we have... The seller worked with me and gave what I consider to be a pretty good deal, 14 batteries in total for under $65 (which included the shipping). He shipped super fast and I got them in about three days. He has LOTS of rechargeables on ebay.

I have the necessary Rayovac Universal Charger, but since these came in fully charged already I did not have to use it with them yet. They're in my M70 making noise even as I type! They did peg my battery meter fully to the right when I first put them in and still do. I've been using the box at low to moderate volume off and on all day and they haven't dropped off yet. Its nice not to lug the cable and be able to put the box wherever I want without worrying about running the batteries down. I hate buying batts and then throwing them away. Money down the tubes and not very helpful to the environment, either.

The seller's description states these are rated at 13,000 mAh and 1.5v, but I can't find the mAh claim substantiated anywhere on Rayovac's site. They do say 1.5v on them, though.

They are discontinued. Why, I don't know. Makes you wonder, if they are so good, why did they discontinue them? I thought I'd give them a shot anyway.

So... my initial reaction is very positive, but its also too early to say for sure if these are a good long term solution.

I do like the fact that these start at 1.5v instead of 1.2v, though. And the claim for 13000 mAh didn't hurt either.

Good luck whichever way you go.
