i picked up a Crown 950 for a song on eBay. it's a great box. the sound is loud and clear (not great low end, as other have already reported), great build quality, but the FM reception is pretty crappy.
it picks up OK when i'm in the city, near the towers. i've taken it to work ,which is about 20 miles outside the city, and it barely picks up 2 stations. even in the city, the "Tuning" light, that shows signal strength, only lights up on a few frequencies.
is this normal for this unit? or is there something i can do about it?
thanks.
krush -- i sure hope some member(s) reply to this for you --
i have a similar type tuner questions from a few days ago posted on this forum --and got no replys , yet.
my otherwise mint and perfect telefunken studio does the same thing as your 950 --and i know that these german jobs are supposed to be famous for their tuners ??
we have lots of members that are great at speakers, decks, power supplies, etc --
but not sure if we have some tuner pros
The tuner may need realignment if somebody at some stage has had a fiddle with the tuning capacitors and trimmers. I had a box like this once where the MW had abysmal performance til I retuned/aligned it, then it ended up at the other extreme and worked a treat.
Just a thought, may be totally unrelated to your problem, but worth considering.
Edit: May sound daft or obvious but check that the internal wire from the board to the base of the antenna hasn't become detached.
that is very true 2steppa the need for adjustment is what brings back some of these radios and as always the years some components start to lose voltage values caps start to dry up and all this eventully will lead to tuners not performing in spec,
but you might say well i have seen newer radios that are worse, most bad design, parts not being in tolerance and so on i hope this helps your question--
thanks ramon -
