Does anyone know the correct belt sizes for the GF-777? I have a service manual, but I don't know how to convert Sharp's part number into a workable width/thickness/circumference.
mee 2...
i have the books, I'll have to look it up. Hopefully I can do it by tomorrow if your not in a rush.
Thanks, Chris! No rush at all. I was actually listening to some cassettes on the 777 and went to rewind and the rewind didn't work. The tape didn't move and the rewind button just popped back out (I guessed because of the auto-stop). Play is fine but the FF and REW need some help.
Figured I go ahead and change all the belts at once.

Deck 2 on mine does the same. only wont rewind if tape is in.

Even before I got my belt collection, I change all the belts whether they need it or not....20 year old belts.......nothing more to say...

Well you got a line forming with s2gers and 20+
yr old belts let us know where to sign.
Add me to the list... I have five GF-777Zs which would all benefit (to say the least) from new belts. If someone has the exact, correct dimensions that would help a lot.
I usually tie a string around the belt path, mark and measure it, then get a few belts close to that size and see which one fits/works best, guessing at the best cross-section (when I can't tell from the remains of the old belt). Not the best method, especially when "correct" sizes are available.

I ordered a few sets of them here last week. Should get them one of these days
Thanks, Frank! Using the information on that website I found another website that's MUCH cheaper.
http://www.hbfelectronics.com/index.php?action=disp_cat...y_code=&PHPSESSID=91$18.09 (with shipping from HBF)
$37.70 (before shipping charges from Turntable website)
It's a no-brainer in my book. Thought others might be interested too.
In most cases it's not a belt problem, not only on the GF777. When the belts are worn out they sometimes nevertheless work pretty good, a Ghetto Blaster wouldn't be moved like a Car HiFi or a Walkman so the wow and flutter produced from the outside isn't so high, so the only problem a worn out belt makes is the tape speed, and that can be adjusted on every tapedeck. Sure, it's good to change the belts, but sometimes there is no effect of it, the tapedeck won't work bette
In some decks there are 3 Idler wheels, one for Play/Record, one for FF and one for Rew, if you start one of this functions one of the idler wheels will be pressed to one of the reels, if the rubber of the idler wheel is worn out or dirty it gets not enough contact to the reel and then it's too weak to pull the tape, especially on Title Search Systems. I had the same problem with my GF777, 2 weeks ago, when it was sent to me the Title Search and the Cueing didn't work good and then I opened it, cleaned the Idler wheels and the belts and now it works fantastic...
Cheers, Tobi
would anyone know if the same belts would fit my GF-767 ?
thanks,
gm
Sorry to ressurect this old post.
I've just changed out my belts ont he 777 thanks to Fatdog for sourcing and shipping me the belts.
However, the rewind still pops back out after a few moments and fails to rewind on both decks. Could this be a mechanical issue as the belts seem perfect now. FF works fine in deck1 but not so great in deck2 which leads me to think that perhaps I've missed something on the belt change. I did follow Fatdog's post for changing them out. Anyone any clue at all please ?
Incidentally the REW pops out with either a tape in or not.
Do the REW and FF actually spin normally or do they seem to struggle? If they are struggling to turn, then I'd say you might have missed the idler wheels that Litfan reminded me of. On mine, the REW and FF would get about halfway through a tape and gradually start slowing down to the point that they stopped completely and the buttons popped back out.
Hi Bobby, Yes there is some rotation on the wheel when rewinding but only for a very short period. I haven;t FF through an entire tape but I'll try it now.
Edit: I remember cleaning the idler wheels before changing the belts.
Deck1 FF's all the way through no problems. Then after testing deck2 I put the tape back in deck1 and it rewound perfectly ?! However when there was more tape on the left side it would not rewind so my guess is the weight was too much for the wheel to turn.
Deck2 seems to struggle a little at the beginning but once it gets going it will FF through the tape to the end without slowing down but will not rewind at all.
Neither are blisteringly quick.
I've got to go back inside to get a little inventive with a damaged screw post to come up with a more permanent fix. So I might as well do the idler on deck2 again as that is what it sounds like it is.
Be sure to give 'em a good rub-down with isopropyl using a cotton swab. Also, clean the plastic on the flywheel where the idlers "grab". Maybe a shot of DeOxit Fader Lube (or something similar) in the hole the flywheel shaft goes into? Be sure to clean up any overspray.
Nice one I'm doing this right now.
I've cleaned up the idler wheels on both decks but one thing I noted about the flywheel is that the plastic which the idler seats onto actually turns on the flywheel. Would that be normal ? Also when placing the flywheels back in place do they need to be in a particular oreintation ?
Note the red pointed part does that need to go in a specific place when put back ?
Also you mention a small "scoop" on the outer edge of one of the flywheels. I'm not quite sure what that means.
Scrap all the above its working on both decks beautifully now. Thanks Fatdog.
Woohoo!! Man, that's great to hear docs. I'm glad all of this got sorted out. Have you tried adjusting the playback heads to see if the sound quality gets better?
Hehe. I tried that first off when I got the box, the sound now is pretty much spot on. Thanks again Fatdog for your help. Now to change the belts on the vz2k
