Hey guys, part deux....Smile

The prototype remote shell should be here tomorrow. I'll post up some pics as soon as I get it. I still have to properly size the board (which should be spot on at this point) and dry fit the final power switch. So while this isn't the final revision....the point of sale should be coming very soon. I am getting quotes right now for properly silk screen production pcb boards for the transmitter and receiver.

The will guarantee lifetime warranty that I will provide each owner of this device.....Wink

kittmaster - 2007-08-16 12:37

Ok the moment we've all been waiting for.......errr.....um......not yet.....the handheld is here and we have some issue to deal with but nothing earth shattering. It seems the buttons are shifted from our original intent. Most likely I mapped the oridinal location from my reference point incorrectly. The images show that mistake.

I've already corrected it as and reprinting new documents 1:1 and then will recut the new raw pcb stock for proper alignment and measurement. G and I are in close contact and we feel that this is a minor hurdle since we can recast the missing height element that is needed

Folks I gotta say the work from G is exemplary, the images he posted were "ok" but to actually have it in hand......the light blue "push keys" for the user.....you would swear its a factory original remote!!!

The prototype shell is very rough, but once its recast, the color and black depth of the mold is .........

Forget it.....its gonna be great when its complete.....Wink

kittmaster - 2007-08-16 12:37

And here we have pass two, since the print is 1:1 the PCB will come out the same way. I'll be recutting a new board for final placement validation:

kittmaster - 2007-08-16 13:38

OK here is the correct and finalized position for the micro switches for control.

this is the final revision for this part. I will be sending a part mocked version to G so he can finalize the casing. We had a brainstorm on the phone today and had some great ideas regarding graphics and the logo we are going to use within my avatar pic......

Stay tuned......Wink

thanks for the fix trp950e

Here is another money shot, this is being sent back to Capitol G tomorrow so he can finalize the case structure to accomodate the heights and adjust the molds. Damn if he only lived closer!!

capital.g - 2007-08-16 14:09

Can I get a wup wup. Big Grin Excellent work. The next time you're holding the prototype, you'll be making another movie for us.

transamguy1977 - 2007-08-16 19:02

Getting closer yet!!!!!
WUP WUP Cool

kittmaster - 2007-08-16 20:31

Here is the final rendition of the transmitter, I had to move a resistor pack due to some final changes. But all in all, its right on target

kittmaster - 2007-08-17 15:04

Just sent the remote mold back to G today express mail. He is fully ready to get this part finished. After this, the molds wil be final!!!

I have to retool the receiver board because of a change in the connector type, so it will be more reliable and less work to construct.

More to come....hopefully more news after the weekend

kittmaster - 2007-08-23 17:14

The latest update is the G has to travel and there won't be any work until early next week. Work and family come first, it will be worth the wait......stay tuned.

Here is a sneek peak of how the remote should look when we get to the finish line:

jvc.floyd - 2007-08-23 18:39

looks great man ,

malakai - 2007-08-23 19:44

sick!

kittmaster - 2007-08-25 15:30

yeah its coming along

jlf - 2007-08-25 15:52

Amazing work!!!

kittmaster - 2007-08-29 09:07

Capitol G has been putting in some major overtime on this project. We had some clearance issues, but now they've been solved. As shown, its one step closer!!

penge - 2007-08-30 04:47

It's getting exciting!!!
Excellent effort, nice one.
This is GREAT forum, always interesting and rockin!!!!!!!!!!!.........s2go.

arkay - 2007-09-04 00:37

It's amazing to see this thing taking shape, through so many stages and corrections. Watching product development in real time, a single example similar to the processes that went into designing our old audio gear in the first place - wow! The expertise and commitment shown here is as strong as anything I've ever seen on a discussion board of any kind. Just great to see.

Now I'll have to figure out how to pay for one of these... Big Grin

kittmaster - 2007-09-04 17:35

Got messaged from Capitol G today, let me say the man has been a busy little beaver, he has spent over 15 hours to get the final part of the remote completed. He said pics tonight, but just giving and update that as soon as he done. So stay tuned, this project only has a few hurdles until we hit the finish line, those hurdles will be on my end but nothing serious.

Will update as soon as the pic arrive

capital.g - 2007-09-04 20:31

Hello everyone. He is where we are.

The remote with all parts inside after the final shaping and sanding. What's cool about the remote is the art deco styling. Shapes within shapes and curves within curves. However, it's this styling that makes it challenging to retain the original look while enlarging the remote. The buttons are crisp and immediate.

Some of the side styling.

Bottom of remote.

9-volt battery compartment, hidden switch.

Another view, hidden switch.

Another view, hidden switch.

Creating the hidden switch for KM was challenging because of the angle of the carving.

The next piece will cover the switch and provide and hook for the battery cover.

The two halves next to each other. Notice the posts the not only hold the board in place but keep it at the right height.

Board being held in place and at the right height.

Because I had to increase the height of the remote, I grew the bottom sides about ¼ of and inch and then used squished clay with al the parts inside to determine the exact height and then re filled for strength.

What's cool is if you go back to page one and look at the rough cast parts compared to these finished parts. Everything was done by hand.

kittmaster - 2007-09-05 09:45

I KNEW the wait was well worth it.........Yep that looks like a keeper. This is really going to be something when we are done....oh...yeah!

capital.g - 2007-09-09 20:10

After a lot of filling and sanding, what you see below is the final finish. It took me a while to figure out which type of paint to use. The tiny little piece that is also painted black is the wedge that covers the on and off switch. The pieces are still drying and can not be handled to much. I have all the graphics ready to go on the unit. The last piece, the battery cover, has given me some problems. The mold I made did not have enough structural support so I had to make another mold. I lost 2 days because of this and the paint issue. I just pulled the new battery cover out of the new mold and it’s great. By tomorrow, it’ll be hard enough to finish. Then I’ll put the graphics on, button up the remote and send it back to KittMaster for another video.

kittmaster - 2007-09-10 04:31

OOOOOOOOOO MMMMMMMMMM GGGGGGGGGGGG

Beau, there are no words, only one thing to really say......

kittmaster - 2007-09-10 06:37

I think this will really push people over the edge....we know it works, looks like that remote is top knotch, I have a feeling this will be big.

isolator42 - 2007-09-10 09:21

Solid R&D teamwork. I wish you two worked at our place... Smile

kittmaster - 2007-09-10 16:00

Beau

One question.......where's the drill hole.......? Will that come when the imprint is passed.?

capital.g - 2007-09-10 16:23

Excellent question - I have multiple sizes of the logo. When I figure out which one to use, I will drill the hole where the red part of the logo is and etch the board for the correct led positioning. What's really cool is the logo is completely light yellow. The black part of the logo is the black paint and the red part of the logo is the led. Can you dig it? Razz

And if you shake the remote while the LED is on, you'll get the time of day...Just kidding.

kittmaster - 2007-09-10 16:26

dude, I've dug it since the first rev.......woohoo!!

I still have to send you the receiver box to replication since I've revved the receiver board to have the new plug in type connector instead of the other manual wire method....Smile

This will save a lot of grief and give the product much more reliability

capital.g - 2007-09-10 16:36

How long until the circuit board is complete? Meaning, if I send you what I have so far, could you make another video for everyone? I really need to know that everything fits before I create the master molds for all the parts. Made in the USA baby...

Cap G

kittmaster - 2007-09-10 17:07

Its going to be few weeks because I have to send the boards out of house, and to keep the cost down, the trade off is time.

As long as the mold fits that board EXACTLY as we expect it, for the handheld part, there will be no further alterations. The only thing that will change will be the wire tracks and movin the led which is surface mount to the center position of where you drill the final hole. As long as there is at least a 6 sheet of paper clearance from the top of the board to the top of the remote and everything fits as it does right now.....that part of the project is DONE!

The last piece will be the reciever box for you.

I still have to map an alternate DC power port from the M90 itself. I have to cut a blank board, but the receiver box will be in its "completed" form and will just need a master mold from you once you determine how to set up the new connector.

Does that make sense about the hand held?

transamguy1977 - 2007-09-10 21:04

Lookin good Wink
Still havent got me a M90 tho.
Waiting for the prices to drop Big Grin

LOL.....put that crack pipe down bro....Wink

capital.g - 2007-09-13 09:10

Hey Gang – I finally got the battery cover looking right and fitting perfectly.

cali9dub - 2007-09-13 09:11

freakin' sweet !!

capital.g - 2007-09-13 09:12

I spent all last night carving out the little symbols and then using them to create a negative impression in the button molds to indicate “play”, “stop”, “fast forward” and “rewind”. The remaining three buttons will be marked with graphics – “pause” for the little circle, “record” and “record pause” for the squares below.

kittmaster - 2007-09-13 10:20

Is there any way to cast the Pause, record and record mute symbols on teh touch pad?

That is absolutely beautiful, can't wait to see it withthe final silk and logo!!!!

capital.g - 2007-09-13 11:34

No problem

kittmaster - 2007-09-13 12:01

I think once the lines are straightened abit and those 3 symbols added, there will be no need to silk the area around the buttons, it will be totally intuative and a lot less work

It looks absolutely fabulous G.....truely masters work there....Wink

capital.g - 2007-09-13 12:09

lines are straightened ??

kittmaster - 2007-09-13 12:11

I just notice on the stop button, a piece or chunk is missing? See how the line "bows" out on the right side of the square? Not sure was caused it...? Silly nit picky on my part no more....Wink

capital.g - 2007-09-13 12:20

I understand now. Yeah, It's because they were hand carved. The peices are so small that it was kind of challenging to get it perfect. I'll work on it.

kittmaster - 2007-09-13 12:23

cool,....not trying to be a jackass.....I just know that others will point it out and I figure we should just nip it in the bud early......Smile

SO please don't take it as any type of criticism, if these things take off, I want to ensure we are rock solid and not have to go backwards on any part of the design....Wink

If you need to call me feel free I'm home all night.

Chris

capital.g - 2007-09-13 12:52

No worries...***** Big Grin Even though this remote is completely hand carved and hand painted, I have tried to make it as professional as possible. However, there will be aspects of the remote that will still point back to the fact that was hand made because of my skill level and tool level. For those aspects, I personally write off as charming. Remember Steve Jobs first Apple keyboard was made out of wood. It’s charming. What is more important is that it works correctly.

kittmaster - 2007-09-13 12:54

great point.....and it will be marketed and sold as "hand made in the usa" from scratch.....damn right!

docp - 2007-09-15 10:58

amazing work guys! Sorry I noticed late....a few tips from dentistry & elsewhere that might help.
It helps a lot to
1. make a prototype out of a material that can be molded with ease like wax/clay/soft wood(we use medium hard wax as is it extremely easy to sculpt and it has sufficient rigidity ) A split silicone mould of the basic shape can be then used to make a rough acrylic shape for finishing. If you use autopolymerizing resin you can add/remove and add again till you get the shape you need
2. Ask your local rubber stamp guy to make 'rubber stamps' the same size & design as the remote switches and either use use directly or duplicate them in silicone rubber .That way you'll have perfect play/ff/stop/rew symbols
3.Make sure you use a brass cylinder with internal screw hole embedded in your plastic instead of letting the screws use direct screw holes

kittmaster - 2007-09-19 13:47

Finalizing pcb design for mass production run. Just waiting for G to get me the raw molds, he has been real busy as of late....so I'll let you know when the boards arrive....3 day turn they are saying.....Smile

kittmaster - 2007-09-26 17:15

Capitol G has sent me the remote, it should be here tomorrow for design finalization. I'll post some current pics when it arrives. I know it seems like this project has slowed down a bit.....believe me, it hasn't, G has just been so busy and I told him to take all the time he needs to get it right vs. rushing it and getting it wrong....

More to come as soon as I get it!

Chris

kittmaster - 2007-10-01 20:22

One of the final hurdles has been completed today. I've receive the remote from G (sweet), I've finished the final artwork and redesign for the final pieces. What does this finally mean?

It means the files are being sent to the board house TOMORROW for production run for both the receiver and the transmitter. They are telling me its a 3 to 4 day lead time which is amazingly short time for a production house.

Once these boards are back hopefully early next week, the final design will be sent to G for some case finalization.

Before I do that, I will be posting another high res video of the production board in the actual remote prototype body in action. This will give a true indicator of the final product.

G will need around 1 week to finalize all the molds and replicate my receiver box (which is easy by his take on it).

So if I did my job right, I'm expecting these things to be ready in approximately 3 weeks to ship out the door since all the parts are here.

kittmaster - 2007-10-04 23:01

The board have officially been sent to the production house. Lead time is 4-6 days.....Can't wait!!

kittmaster - 2007-10-10 18:12

Thread update, the production board house has completed the boards, they are on the UPS truck and I have the tracking number. Expect delivery is on the 16th.

Capitol G has retooled his entire workshop to be ready to go. Man I can't wait to get this done.
