Two part Question:
1) Which box was your EASIEST to change belts on?
2) Which box was the most difficult to change belts on?
In my case, I've only been inside a couple of boxes with belt issues thus far.
The Sharp GF-9696 was quite easy to change belts. Lots of screws and disassembly, but easy nonetheless.
Most difficult (looking) was the Hitachi TRK-8180. The tape drive is hidden behind a huge circuit board in the middle/back of the box. I was well intentioned and sourced the belt, but at the Sunshine Mix 08 meet in July I ended up trading it to Oldskool69 for another JVC before I got around to changing the belt...
I'm hoping this thread will reveal that the JVC M70 and Sanyo M9990 are considered easy, as those will likely be my next projects.
some of the easiest:
Crown 850, 950,
CEC
trc931

I had to dismantle the entire box just to get the frame rail out......the top, the side......and all the disconnections and routing to make it happen......what a pita it was......
Worst, Aiwa CS660 and quite a few others.....
Easiest,Crown 950.

Thanks for playing DM4U. I think the generic answer to your question is that belts that are used regularly tend to last longer than ones that sit unused for along period of time. I have seen belts last for two decades. I don't think model number has any bearing on how fast belts are worn. Sounds like another topic.
Have you had to change any belts? Anything to share in that regard?
Since belt changes seem to be the most common problems with tape decks, seems this might be good information to know... My goal with this thread is to give readers an idea of how difficult belt replacement projects are for various different box models. Based on experiences from users who have actually changed belts themselves, I think this will help folks kind of understand what is ahead for them should they need to perform belt changes.
It might also help someone who is considering buying a box with a non-working tape deck to take the plunge vs. not touching one with the proverbial 10-foot pole.
So far for me:
Telefunken HP 800 was easy!
The Panasonic RX DT-680 looks to be a pita!
Easiest: RISING SRC-2015, Hitachi TRK-8610
Most Ridiculous: Aiwa TPR-950*, Denon H-55
*I didn't actually change the belts on this one and gave up due to wanting to keep a modicum of my sanity.
Rock On.
Disgusting ass pains:
Sanyo M9990
GE 3-5283A (mini)This is a fkin joke and I doubt they expected anyone to EVER service these.
Easy:
All Lasonics
