I'm a sanitation worker for the city of NYC, and i came across a Sharp GF-777 sitting on a curb being thrown away. I know I'm not going to sound realistic here, but I KNOW I'm going to need parts for it like no tomarrow. Just by visually looking at it, two woofers are cracked. The aentenas are missing, and there was no front grill. Not that I'm looking for the grill. BEsides all that, where do i go about finding parts for this sucker. I've decided to team with my brother (well to do electrician) to rebuild this ***** so I can rock out on the streets of NYC by summer 2008. I'm not going to sell this radio once complete. Contact me via email @ PeterSobieski@gmail.com if anyone is feeling in a good mood to help someone BRAND NEW to this forum, and the boombox world in general. Thanks in advance to those who help me out here.
I just downloaded the manuals that one of you guys had the links to. Pretty sure this will all come handy.

Welcome aboard !!!!
There is a wealth of knowledge here on the site
so you came to the right place.
NYC huh!, was just visiting this weekend in S.I and Brooklyn (Born and raised)
Here and epay are a great resource for parts.
Ive seen the grilles and speakers on more than one occasion on ebay.
Get with autobot about his modded 777 he put some killer drivers in his and it rocks.

Thanks Transamguy1977, I'm learning some real basic stuff via this site. I'm liking how i never realized that modding boxes was a way to go. I mean im no real boom box elitist as of now, so i dont need to have the original parts so to speak. I do like what Autobot dude did with the speakers. Thinking i'm going to copy it. Perhaps huddle with my brother and see what he wants to do. This site is goign to the reason this box comes back to life. Do you believe i found this thing sitting on a curb to be throw away? Also, I'm goign to assume you mean Ebay, right?
Welcome Peter. Great find congratulations, work on that baby and it will be so worth it when your done.
Yes eBay sometimes can throw up spares for 777's so try to adjust your searches often and you'll eventually find something. Also, look on other eBay country sites too as many members here will be happy to ship the item to you if necessary as some sellers will not ship abroad.
Try and get your brother to get to the bottom of what exactly is needed bit by bit then the good members here can really begin to help you out.

Welcome Peter, you found a great box in just the right shape to do your own mods. Since some of the parts like the speakers are already toast it's a perfect opportunity to improve it. Parts for the 777 come up for sale a lot although sometimes they can be pricey. This is a great site for those that appreciate boomboxes and has a wealth of information to help you along. Good luck and let us know how the 777 turns out.
Thank you all for such a warm reception. Most likely im going to try and give the radio the intital opening on Monday if we arent still hung over. Will be in touch with this board no doubt.

Peter, if it's any help our own Vladi123456 has had better luck working on his boxes while heavily intoxicated.
the best boombox is always the one you get for free. good stuff and good luck with the resto modding. cool
Okay, so here is the low down on this box. The cosmetics of the box itself is shot by you guy's standards. It's scratched, nicked, and has a cracked glass in front of the FM Tuner station numbers. The speakers and woofers are totally shot. The anteneas are missing, as well as the tape doors and speaker grills. The tape decks have issues but one main thing at a time.
We opened up the box and we see that the box has been altered already. The original Sub's have been replaced with two Panasonic EAS-16P401E 8W, 40 Oh Sub's. The Sub's were jumped out from the original Mid's. It was poorly done as the jumped wires aren't even soldered to the replaced Sub's. Also, who ever did this work cut the two wires to the Sub's disconnecting the "Super Woofer Sound" knobs.
THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT IT POWERS UP! It will play an external source (an Ipod we hooked up.) So basically I want to get the speakers, woofers, and tweeters replaced. However i dont want to do any drilling. Basically my question to you guys who have modded the 777, is "What mid's and sub's will fit in the box with out any major alteration?" I already seen the Rockford Fosgate T-162c's. How about mids? I am going to install the Dayton Audio Tweeters I seen someone on here do to there's. But how about the Mid's. Whats going to fit with out me having to drill? ALSO. From the Mid range to the tweeeter, there is an in-line resistor. When I change out the tweeters, can i use that same resistor or do I have to get a new resistor.
I need the two anetenas. Where can I cop two comparable sized aentenas for the 777? Since the radio is never going to become fully restored and "grailed", I've decided to just go nuts with it and make it purely unique. Most likely a paint job by an artist friend I have. The tape functions will be fixed down the line when I can get my brother and I to sit down and get the balls to take it all apart and make it work again. I'll get into tape player issues down the line, but let me just get the sound to come out with out popped speakers.
THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE.
Peter, did you get the ebayer listing number for 777 stuff on your other thread? This seller has your two doors, all the knobs & buttons, both grills and a batt. cover too. SHARP777Z BOTH decks door. Item number: 330181244117
I did, thank you. Right now im more concerned about speakers that are going to fit. Would rather spend the money on making it sound nice first. The tape doors are on hold for the time being. The MP3 player is what im goign to use for the time being. Slow but tedious process of making it a unique box.
I gotcha. I know these things don't come up for auction often enough when one is looking for them. I'd hate to see you miss out on them if that's what you needed. Best of luck on your resto. How bout some starter pics? Like "before & after" (way after)
Ya know, we screwed the box back together...and i said "SH*T! We should oftook a picture." Just to show you what a night mare job this previous owner did to the speaker wiring. Next time it gets opened, I will snap a shot. I'll document it for you guys. Why nopt, it if it wasnt for you folks none of this would be happening.
You gotta do a classic pose with it. You know, an exterior shot of it
Seriously.....dont get the hopes up..like i said..the exterior is in horrible shape...once i get the speakers in, next imma do is paint job the whole thing...i am not even going to come close to making it looking pretty liek a full restoration...its going to be a straight up mod job. a true 'ghetto' blaster thing.
hi man that box takes standard 6.5 inch woofers ,even car speakers will bolt right in with no mods,i might have a tuner glass although i know its not perfect i have to go in the attic and look at my scrapper gf777 to see first.i have a spare amp board but i dont know if it works or not but it looks like theres nothing visually wrong with it,what ever scraps i have you are welcome to them ,i dont have the cassette doors or the grilles.
So ANY 6.5 car audo speakers are goign to fit? Im not going to ordersomething and not have it fit for some strange reason?
Thanks JVC. Let me know about the glass. Or even the doors for that matter. I'm not too worried about the grills because like I said, this box isn't going to be fully "grailed" on you guy's level. The boxes I see on this site are immaculate. Looks like they weren't even breathed on wrong. My box, when all said and done is going to have a jury rigged feel. It will be classy no doubt. I'm thinking eventually getting all functions working again and giving it a full paint job. I have friends who are very talented graffiti artists. So something on that level. First thing that HAS to be done is getting them damaged speakers out. All the guts looked fine. No need for tha amp board or anything. The tape decks have major issues but I'm not tackling that just yet. Give that some time.
Is the glass part of the front of the box? or it part of the actual electronic tuner part of the guts? Is it connected to the box or the gut part?
Also, My tape 1-2 operation button is missing. it looks as if the post/switch itself is cracked. (I'm assuming who ever had this radio before me drop the sucker and thats why the doors are gone, glass is cracked, and switch is missing, broke off)
Also, where can i get jury rigged aentena's? The radio worked because i still have the metal post inside the radio but obviously i need the rabbit ears for crisp continuous sound.
HOWEVER! From the Mid range to the tweeeter, there is an in-line resistor. When I change out the tweeters, can I use that same resistor or do I have to get a new resistor.
hi i dont have the doors ,the glass is glued to the front casing ,the only thing you have to worry about with after market speakers is they get real close to the amp board so you have to put some tape around the speaker frame to keep the metal from touching the amp board on the middle pair of speakers
The magnets on the back of the speakers you mean? What about the in-line resistors that go from tweeter to the mids? Replace? Can keep?
no the frame of some replacement speakers mounts too close to the amp board ,this means the front mounting flange of the speaker gets in close proximity to the amp ,on the middle speakers only .you can keep the wires from the old tweeters and just hook new ones up to those wires.
Forgive me for sounding like a rookie here (which I am), Whats the worse case scenerio if I dont put tape on the front mounting flange? Blowing up my amp?
well you only need to put a strip of tape on the flange right where it gets close to the amp board .you will see when you mount the speakers ,most don't have any problems but some speakers have bigger mounting flanges than others ,i just put tape there to add a little protection fron the parts possible touching each other.
i have a spare amp board but i never tested it ,
Thanks but I'm not goign to need an amp board. Everything worked. The VF meters, radio, tape counter, dials and switches, etc. Just need to get new speakers and attach rigged antenas, and EVENTUALLY repair the tape decks. Thats for the help. Will get to searching the neighborhood car audio spots to find a cheap set of decent speakers. I wanan get two sub, and two mid with the new tweeters. Just give it a speaker orgasm so to speak. Any recomendations? Otherwise i'm just going to go by advice from the audio spots, and i know they will try to rip me off to make money. You know how NYC audio stores are, im sure? (I'm trying to avoid paying shipping costs since i live ina big ass city)
well if you are going to shop around take out the woofers and take one with you to make sure the holes line up ,most 6.5 inch speakers bolt right in without any problems.
Well, do you know whats going to line up and sound incredible off hand? I'm not really specific right now. Just want pumping sound.
most standard 6.5 inch 4 ohm car speakers will fit ,new speakers will sound great in that box as the factory ones were just not very good ,you can even use coaxials so you dont need to worry about replacing the factory tweeters, because they will be built into the new speakers.
The subs are 6.5 and the mids are 6.5's? both the same size yes?
also, as far as speaker watts and oh's? is there a max that i can install?
your best bet is too look for some that have a high sensetivity rating preferably higher than 90 db's this means you will get the most out put from minimal power input .the max power is useless because the sharps amps arent going to match that anyway ,so get some that have a low minimum wattage rating because they are usually more efficient with the power.you want to use 4 ohm speakers .
all for woofers are the same size ,6.5 inches
Floyd, you are the man. Now i can walk into any car audio joint in nyc and not get took. I now have the idea of what is needed, so i can make a better descion. You are a god send my man.
cool man glad i could help.iv'e done these mods before so i know they work and make a big difference in the sound ,
by the way the amp board on the gf 777 is in the middle of the box between the center woofers ,thats where all the speaker wires come from ,if you look in the tech talk section you will find a mutant gf777 you may be able to see the speaker wiring there to match them up with yours.
I'm looking ohms on woofers. The Impedence should be 4 ohms? or 4 and greater?
i would stick with 4 ohm speakers ,they are the same as the stock ones.
I was thinking 2 woofers, and 2 mids 2way's. Over kill? Or should i just go for all two ways? Like forget about attaching woofers and just go for 4 2-way mids?
its up to you man ,either way will sound good
i think 4 of the pyles will do fine .get ready to rock !
Depending on the holiday weekend. I should have the Pyles here by Tuesday. Will take pictures.
I think thi would be more ideal for the center woofers
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=299-426In my experience with adding round frame car speakers, a slight mod may occur, like bending the speaker frame so it will fit.what u would be looking for is a woofer like the one in the link with that particular frame..There are plenty speakers like that around. This woofer may be good for the outside midbass replacement
http://www.electronix.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPat...64/products_id/13518 Good luck with with it.
Thanks Jimski. However, I've decided on just modding the box outright and forget abotu restoring it to the factory sold level. I grabbed two sets of those Pyle i found off Parts Express, and they should be arriving tomarrow. Thanks for the help regardless. However, if you can find me doors cheap AND local, that would be fantastic. Seen the guy on Ebay with the doors but i havent heard a response back yet from him via email. I dont really trust foriegn sellers/want to pay the rediculous shipping. Peace.
i put 2 6.5" fosgates in the center. it sounded just plain sick
the 777's sound so much better with better speakers. i think you will be pleasantly surprised when you install the pyle's. remember to check your mounting depth too. take a look:
http://stereo2go.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1696027254/m/9441003315/p/4
Just installed the 4 Pyle's. Had a b*tch of a time doing it. Turned out the speakers didnt even come close to the holes in the box for mounting. So with a little modifying the speakers....we got them to fit. We basically had to cut into the metal rim of the speakers, bend them down to where they went over the mounting holes. Drilled a new hole and inserted the screws through the newly made holes above the mounting holes. I took pictures, but they are goign to be emailed to me. You'll see what I did in a day or two. But they are pretty f'ing banging. Ears were getting damaged as i sat in front of it with the volume all the way up.
aaaahhhh ,a little meatball surgery .gotta love it ,sounds like success to me .
Heres the the old speaker with replacement Pyle. (Note mounting holes differ)
Pyle on top of busted speaker.
Here comes trouble.
Cut up Pyle with untouched pyle.
Problem fixed.
Closer look
Finally
YES I KNOW I AM MISSING DOORS AND I HAVE A CRACKED GLASS! One crisis at time fellas.
JESUS them picture are way tooooo big!.
man i think i at least have a better tuner window than the one you have give me a few more days to look at it to make sure.great work man .
