Pretty sweet. Tapes don't work though and super dirty. So I decided to pull it apart and see what I could find. While it's apart, are there any things that I should be aware of? Common problem that shows up or anything?

The biggest thing I've found so far was a missing screw in the tape 2 play head mechanism. Fortunately, the screw was stuck in some grease next to the "healingmagic" crystal that someone lost years ago to the box gods. Seems as though there should be a spring under it though...anybody have any ideas? Also, the power button doesn't turn the box off? Does that make sense/is that normal operation? The power light is on whether it's in the on OR off position. The power light only goes out if the sensor button is pushed. And the alarm/sensor DOES work. Found that out the heartstopping way (forgot that I set it when walking out of the room...). I'll put some pics up! Thanks everybody, this site is pretty cool.

PS. Here's a video

below is the pic of the missing screw location (on the right side of the tape head there)

That is a damm fine box man,i used to have one but it had issues and was'nt 100% condition so i sold it,still a nice beast..the deck problems on yours will most likely be down to worn belts, replace them and should be ok,as for the head spring,i'm sure you could get any old crappy poor quality boombox and snatch a spring off it,almost any head spring should do the job..by the way,if you decide to sell it on,get it on ebay,it should fetch good coin on there,,congrats and welcome :-)

could be someone was trying to fix the azimuth there..just a guess....the top deck is notorious in time getting its azimuth misaligned....i remember when i had mine in the 80s....the top deck got muffled in sound i nearly lost my mind...i couldnt sleep or think....i was just a teen back then...i cracked it open and saw that the screw lock or green liquid was cracked....so i had to tighten it and put some glue on it to hold it and that remedied the problem...i also bought another conion a year later same thing happened to it....sooo....my suggestion is put like some lock tight on the head screws.....after aligning the heads to proper sound, the screw hole to align it i believe is above the board somewhere so be cautious in doing so.......just a tip....for conions...

Cool, thanks guys. Found the source of the power switch problem. If the tape head doesn't completely retract on the bottom deck, it keeps the motor running thinking that it has to keep going. Not exactly sure what the situation is, but I just kept cleaning things until it all worked.

Have another problem now. Got it all back together and can't play a tape because it looks like there is a piece missing from the deck door. Some kind of spring to hold the tape tight to the mechanicals. Does anybody have a picture of what it should look like? Thanks!

nothing? Here's a new video with all the fixes. You can see how I improvised the fix for the lack of a spring near the end.
