Cleaning help needed

cib3k - 2011-07-20 12:48

I need to clean an older dual cassette player with cd (around 15 years old) and I'm not sure how to do it. It's some generic Chinese brand (Kosonic) but it's really well built and it survived so far.

1. What should I use to clean the equalizer sliders? I've been told to use kerosene (the domestic kind, not the jet fuel). It should clean and also lubricate a bit. Is it OK?

2. There are a lot of buttons/switches on the board, I'm not sure how to call them. Some of them don't even work anymore. Is there any way to clean them?

3. There are also some big selectors, which work fine, but I was thinking of cleaning them anyway. What should I use?

4. The original belts seem to work fine, except for one which is too slippery. When the motor turns, it doesn't grip the belt, which just slips. I think I might have touched it by mistake when oiling some of the parts. How do I clean it? Is soap and water OK? I'm not gonna use any strong stuff, no matter how safe it is. It's old rubber, it still works, and I really don't want to damage it.

I'm from Europe. Please don't recommend specific brands, use generic names instead. Alcohol, naphta, paint thinner and so on. Thanks.

Thanks, but it seems that Servisol Super 10 causes plastic to degrade after several months. You can read more here. I've also been recommended Philips Contact Cleaner 390CCS, but it's not made anymore, only a chinese copy exists. Any other suggestions?

never hurd of that one before mate, thats a total new one to me !

servisol is one of the best brands you can buy,i've been using it for years and never had a problem, never had any plastic degrade or anything like that,i've had some of my ghetto blasters 17 years and i used servisol on all of them and they are all still good as new,you only have to use it once on a very rare occasion,or if the item has been sitting unused for years..a friend of mine has got an electrical repair shop and he's been using servisol for about 25 years,if he thought it would damage anything, there is no way he would use it because the customers would be back complaining..it really is good stuff..

i've also used maplins own brand, thats good stuff too, just a tiddly fraction not as good as servisol but it does the job well..

Not sure about Kerosine,i dont know anyone thats ever used it,i'm sure if you used that it would destroy the carbon track that the pots run on to adjust the settings..try to use stuff that is designed to do the job,e.g servisol, maplin ect..dont beleve all you read on the internet
